He has served in the Israeli Defense Forces for four years, including during the Yom Kippur War, before becoming a historian whose work has focused extensively on the Holocaust, genocide, war, and mass violence.
His books include the award-winning Anatomy of a Genocide, The Life and Death of a Town called Buchach, and his newest book, Israel, What Went Wrong.
He's also a major voice in the debate over Gaza in its current state, where he argues that Israel
Is committing a genocide against the Palestinians in Gaza, a position that he laid out in a influential 2025 New York Times essay entitled I'm a Genocide Scholar.

Um, we have a lot to talk about.
I want to jump right into your area of expertise.
I think your path towards your current position is really interesting and nuanced.
And before we dive into the current state of Gaza and the genocide, I would love to hear a little bit more about your background and what led you to this work initially.
And initially, you, like many scholars, uh resisted immediately applying the let the label of a genocide.
And I you said in an interview that the Rafah operation in particular was sort of a turning point for your views on Israel's actions in Gaza.
I'm curious what specifically about there became either crossed a threshold or became undeniable to a degree.
I mean, I remember a few specifics, but I'm very curious as to what it was for
for you that went from uh the hesitance towards using that label to seeing something that you felt was definitively a genocide.
