She walked over to the table and reached out toward the cat, intending to give him a pet.
He dodged her hand and broke into a wide smile once again.
Alice playfully shook her finger at him, picked up her tools, and approached the boy.
She leaned down towards the gaping cavity in his chest and began fitting the mechanical heart into place.
She hummed an old tune under her breath once more as she connected the wires and gears.
A few moments later, everything was ready and she stepped back.
"'I think it fits.
It looks absolutely lovely overall.
What do you think?'
Alice surveyed her creation with a critical eye.
She turned towards the ubiquitous cat, but as usual, he merely offered a wink and a broad grin.
"'Right, I actually have to start it up.'
Alice slapped her forehead, waved a dismissive hand at the fluffy creature, and rubbed her chin.
The girl dashed headlong towards the table, snatched up an exquisitely crafted brass key, and returned to Dean.
With the solemnity of a pioneer, she inserted the key into the tiny keyhole and turned it several times.
A series of rhythmic clicks rang out, and moments later, the mechanism sprang to life accompanied by a resonant ticking.
