But in South Africa, sex has become a game of roulette for girls.
That's because nearly one in five South Africans are HIV positive.
One in five.
It's really hard to avoid this virus.
And nearly a third of women are infected by the time they're 30.
But providing you have access to antiretroviral medication, which many more South Africans do now, you can live a healthy life.
Like Katusimi Daphne, she's 23 years old and she's just graduated from college in Uganda.
She and her mother kept their shared secrets.
From the rest of the family, but when one of her brothers found out, he disowned his sister.
So the stigma surrounding HIV is alive and well.

Katusimi is full of positive energy and enthusiasm, even about her HIV positive status.
But for many of her peers, HIV starts with adversity.
So you might hook up with an older guy, for example, who expresses his love for you but he's HIV positive.
So there's a real mismatch
And that makes young girls more vulnerable to violence and to rape too.
I meet Rose at a beachside camp for HIV-positive teenagers outside of Durban.
It's called Camp Sisanami, run by a really impressive outfit called Global Camps Africa.
