Rod's diagnosis was one he knew all too well.
His mother had died of it after working in a hardware store.
Rod also lost his first wife to cancer when their kids were young, so he was going to throw everything at those tumours.
It was horrible.
When Karen found out her cancer had returned and was spreading aggressively, the chemotherapy didn't work.
Karen had three small children.
The stakes were high.
So she asked her doctors about a clinical trial, to little avail.
The drug Karen found goes by the name of Keytruda, and after a very public campaign, which Karen was part of, it's now on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme, the PBS, in Australia.
But back then, a trial was only just about to start in Melbourne, and Karen lived more than 700 kilometres away in Adelaide, and she'd have to fly every two weeks.
it's a pretty hefty list of side effects at this point i mean this is an immunotherapy drug it's employing your own immune system to fight the cancer cells there is a risk that your immune system could start attacking normal organs and tissues anywhere in your body
That could be potentially extremely nasty, even life-threatening.

Phase three clinical trials, you know, where you might not get the trial drug at all, you will get certainly a standard treatment like a cocktail of chemo drugs, but you may just get a placebo pill instead of the trial drug.
Are people really clear on this when they're going in, what that actually means?

Her cancer's come back four times in the last eight years.
And when a genetic test revealed she had the BRCA1 gene, she became eligible for a trial out of the USA.
