Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
It's that little lull before Thanksgiving hits. And it happens every November. And it's kind of team start getting chopped off, but we don't want to say it yet, just in case. So like, all right, we got to kind of talk about the Bengals a little bit. All right, just in case. Well, the Jets won a game, so we kind of have to talk about them still.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
Now, until we can kind of get to Thanksgiving, I think everyone's a little too scared to just completely defeat them out of our discussions, completely wipe them out. So we have this little lull. Always just a little lull from like week nine when we do the little mid-season awards to like week 13. And then we get to Thanksgiving and then December. And then we're like, oh yeah, yeah, here we go.

Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
Playoffs are coming up. Here we go. Let's rock.

Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
No, those are really good. That's a good set right there. Because even the ones that we thought maybe were going to drop off are still, like I said, interesting. I like a good Loser Leaves Town match at this state of the year. Starting in November, we can start getting those out there. It's almost Survivor Series time, so we can do that. So I love a good Loser Leaves Town match.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
Like, okay, these two teams are playing. Whoever loses, yeah. You're not getting talked about for a few weeks until we start talking about draft order or a new head coach.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
That was Sunday Night Heat or Saturday Morning Jack. That was the C shows from WWE used to have. That's what that was right there.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
It is funny when I start kind of planting flags on quarterbacks, I kind of get involved via Twitter and the beats for those teams. So I've been introduced to more Patriots reporters and bloggers than I ever even knew about going into this year.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
And also maybe why Belichick told them, you know, never gave them anything because holy crap, the day-to-day stuff that was going on during training camp with the Patriots was, it was pretty interesting. But this is me kind of raising that flag. I'm like the picture at Iwo Jima. Like the flag is just starting to get raised up there. You know, I think you're down there. A couple of us are up there.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
We're all pushing it up. This is why I was excited about him. He's a walking, talking, explosive play. And I think in the NFL right now, that is what you need at quarterback. You need guys, yes, to be smart and play the quarterback position. I mean, it's like operation and nickel and diming, getting the safe throws. I always thought May could do that better than people gave him credit for.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
But then you see the first completion against the Bears to Austin Hooper, throwing a guy open 25 yards down the field. Or the week before, a couple of weeks before, I should say, him just scrambling around when nothing was there, tucking and running against the Titans and against the Jets. That didn't end as well, but tucking and running and getting those opportunities.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
And that's what he was in college with a bad supporting cast his second year starting, his last year starting. So that's why I was kind of like, no matter what his situation was, I kind of thought he would be able to still show signs because of just his explosive playability and his used to D minusness around him.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
You know, so, but this is, this is, you know, it's not all perfect, but it is, there's so many just encouraging signs of the little things that they're doing, that completion that he had before the half against the bears. When they, he hit, that was my favorite throw. Probably he's made as a pro, which was just the, the in breaker to pop the, or no, to booty. Yeah. Boutte. And then it was right.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
They had clock ticking down. No timeouts. He runs up. They spike the ball. Beautiful operation with one second to go. That is so encouraging because that's not only just a cool throw that anyone can watch. It's also just the little things, the awareness of that situation. Again, this is why I was so excited about him with the intangible stuff that we talked about the last time I was on the show.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
Talking about being the little brother, being a good athlete, being competitive. You're already hearing stories about him having, you know, speaking to the team and requesting to do that.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
pretty it's pretty exciting I'm sure Patriots fans are exciting but I just think any good people appreciator of good quarterback play should be excited about Drake May because he has there's glimpses right now special stuff that he's doing
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
Yeah, which I was pulling my hair out a little bit because I never thought the mental side for May was why he had to sit, which is why you usually sit a guy. Well, this guy's only been in an air raid offense. He's never had to handle this. He's never had to handle that. He's never had to be in a huddle. All those things.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
I watched May and the in-between stuff was a lot of encouraging mental aspects. I saw him changing protections. I saw him doing a lot of aspects that maybe encouraged that he could start right away. And I think the footwork stuff got overblown because footwork was... Like that's coachable. That's what drove me nuts during that whole draft process where people acting like that's damning.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
It was, well, what if we cleans up the footwork that you guys are all worried about? And he's doing these things with quote unquote bad footwork. And a lot of stuff is just people kind of talking out of their ass, I think. He bounces. You even see him now. And even the quarterback coach talked about it. I'm blanking on his name right now.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
But he was talking about like, hey, you look and how he moves in the pocket. That's a good thing because he's keeping his eyes downfield because he's looking to attack the defense. And sometimes when another offensive lineman's losing, it can look like he's drifting into another pressure, but he's going away from the initial pressure, which is a good thing. That's exactly what you want.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
The speech thing, too, is just that mentality. He has that... perfect level of golden retriever brain that I love. You know, Josh Allen's got that a little bit too, where it's like, it's confidence and everything, but they still have that little goofiness that it's like, okay, you're not just a total robot, you know, that people can relate to this.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
He made the, he made the reporters clap for the defense. Yeah. That was hilarious. Cause it was just, he, it's just genuine. Like he's just going out. I'm with you. I agree. Right. It wasn't like him going like, Oh, this will be funny. He was like, Hey, let's do it. And like one person clapped and he was in phase. He was like, yeah, okay. That was fun.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
Like those little things really add up, especially when you're losing. Um, everything you can do anything when you're winning, everything's great when you're winning, but when you're losing those little things and guys are going like, oh, this guy's not like a total diva or this guy's not a, uh, a total just, you know, homeschool kid.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
Like some of these quarterbacks can act like this guy's just a player. You hear other receivers talk about them. I mean, they all rave about them. In between complaining about not getting the ball, they all rave about them. Again, these are just the little things when you're not in the building that you kind of look for and go like, oh, okay, these are the things I would bet on.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
And I mean, the bet's looking really good right now.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
Oh, God. This is even more of a lofty praise. The high, high-end comp I have for him, and this was going into the draft process, was John Elway. Yeah, I know. It's that big arm. Elway was... Again, these are the late memories. We remember the Broncos winning the Super Bowls with Mike Shanahan and him becoming more of a bootleg guy and more of an auxiliary guy to the run game.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
You know, being a Shanahan run game and he was moved on the move.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
But Brian Elway was running around, throwing, you know, launching balls, trying to try all these aggressive throws. And again, this is the .001% comparison for May. But that's the guy where I was trying to come up with some high-end comp.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
And I was like, that's really who I think of because the looseness of the athlete, being able to throw a missile wherever he wants, that competitiveness, sometimes that Like, he's not a dummy. I call him a golden retriever. But Elway was a coach's kid, obviously. Very smart. But he would still try stuff. You know, would still try and still push the ball. He honed it in as the years went along.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
You know, shoot, the Broncos drafted Tommy Maddox for a reason. But really, it was just that kind of loose athlete, that big arm. And that's where... I see the ideal version of him becoming where it is a guy that throws on the move. There is more polish as it comes along.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
But even the stuff like the mistakes he makes right now, John Hollinger always, when he used to write the stat write-ups for ESPN, this always kind of stuck with me that He would talk about young players and usage and turnover rate actually being a good sign down the road to star level play because it's those guys, they have the trust to handle the ball and two, that they're trying stuff.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
Like that is the kind of the counter of what's happening with Caleb Williams right now is that he's really trying to be perfect from the pocket and it's limiting his creation ability while May is playing just loose and fast and everything. And yeah, he'll make a mistake. He'll try a ball. I mean, the interception against the Bears was just... He's just going to have two of those a game.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
Yeah, but you take the other 48 good plays and you just deal with those overwhelming negatives because he's figuring it out. Even Mayo addressed this. He even said, he was like, yeah, I want him to try and figure this stuff out. You're learning what my ceilings are. Oh, I can't do that this time. Okay. And what's cool about Mayo is you can tell he learns from those mistakes.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
Like he is so cognizant. It's him talking about not going to the Celtics game. That self-awareness, I think, is just really encouraging. You want that for any athlete, but especially your franchise quarterback, you take it number three. And again, that's why it's encouraging.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
And just that, just the size of those two, they're both 6'4", 225. Yeah. They're both like, and that's, thank you for saying the Allen thing. That's why I never want to throw out the Allen comp. There are some play style comparisons that, But that's like comparing, you know, a two guard with a power forward. Right. You know, like it's, yes, they can play a little similar.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
They do some wonky or wacky things. The sideline throw is exactly a great example. But it's also just like a, yeah, Allen is 6'5 and change and a legitimate 240. And a guy like Justin Herbert, who also gets the Drake May comparisons, Herbert's 6'6", 240. And 6'4", 225, and 240, that is a significant difference.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
Cooper's on KG comps for him? That feels weird for me.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
No, like Cam Newton that can throw even better. Like, yeah, it's just, but again, that's, you're using different disclaimers with that flag was I watched the Kentucky game.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
Yeah.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
Yeah, and I would say Jane Daniels for me, well, for me, yeah, because I made one and then killed two, but I would say Jane Daniels squeezed it closer than I gave him credit for. Interesting. I had a half-tier gap with Daniels. You know, still some of the stuff I've been very impressed with, and I'm eating crow on Cliff Kingsbury, trust me.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
And I just actually wrote about it today and just the offensive improvements, the cool stuff they're doing, a lot of tempo stuff. And I think Daniels has played to what I thought maybe his ceiling would be. There's just still some stuff I'm still wanting to see in the second half of the year. He doesn't really push the ball. It's very selected when he pushes the ball. And don't get me wrong.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
I'm talking about both sides of my mouth. He is excelling when he does it. But it's just... They haven't really faced the toughest slate of defenses that have forced them to do it. They faced the Steelers who really took it to them. And you could see them just not be comfortable.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
That's another one. And also my little short list I got. I'm talking a little Eagles in that too. But the thing was, I thought Daniels was a half tier below those guys. And I would say now him and Caleb are more closer for me than I would give him credit for. I'm still worried about the skinniness. He has done a phenomenal job of avoiding hits. He is so, so fast. Like he is incredibly fast.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
But the thing is, you know, It's a long season. You know, you just take a couple of wrong hits, a couple of big blows. Those start to stack up, you know, body blows start to stack up. So I'd still though, I think I still would have them one, two, three like that. But Daniels would be a true number three or more of a two B, two A kind of thing.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
Absolutely. And that's another thing why Daniel's a little bit lower. Like his two red alerts, and I would say red alerts, but I guess I was about to say red flags, but two kind of red flags there were age, skinniness, throwing over the middle, and the hits that he took. He seems to be able to mitigate throwing over the middle. You can do that if you win other ways.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
He wins with acceleration and speed, But the thing is, again, what else are we tapping into? This is exactly how he played in college. Yeah. And it was good in college. He won the frickin Heisman. But again, this does matter because he was an older prospect. Bo Nix is a super old prospect. Bo Nix was as old as the oldest quarterback since Brandon Whedon drafted in the first round.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
You know, that absolutely matters. Drake May was in true air raid offenses that had no detail and no structure. That's why I was bullish on. Yeah. was that, okay, we haven't even tapped into what he's actually good, what he could actually become. Caleb Williams in kind of a Lincoln-Riley offense, that takes adjustment to the NFL.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
I just thought that he had some, and I still do, I think he's actually pretty advanced mentally, but that I thought he would actually transition a little better. But even for me, I was like, oh, maybe I was a little ahead of myself there. But yeah, they're going to have more of a learning curve, especially than a guy that's 24 who has maybe seen 20 more games. Those reps add up.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
So yeah, no, absolutely. Age, especially at quarterback is a big thing because it's just reps that these guys have. Like Anthony Richardson's younger than all these guys. So it's, you know, that's just another aspect of evaluating these guys.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
Yeah, he's turning back into that.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
Yeah, the scar tissue of it all. I think maybe this should be a great learning example for everybody about, you know, shoot, we're still discussing Trevor Lawrence and whether he's it or not. But it's like how much situation matters for even the best quarterbacks. And I mean, there's 11 guys on offense. There's 22 starters.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
Yeah. You know what I mean? I'd say it's at least half, you know, it is. I mean, look at Jared Goff from rookie year to Jared Goff with Sean McVay the next year. Like that, it went from, this is the worst rookie quarterback I've ever seen to, wow. Oh, okay. We actually got something here to almost an MVP candidate.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
And also another thing too, I want to, because Caleb got, is getting, you get a lot of backlash if you could describe as generational. Yeah. And which is why that, that G word should be outlawed. It's a bet that we're making on these prospects. Some bets like, you know, Wemby, the alien, Victor, like, yeah, 90% star here, you know, 8% starter and probably a 1% bench bust.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
A guy like CJ Stroud, he was my quarterback one in that class. I look at it as star starter bench bust. It's a basketball one I take for it. But him, I thought his star was like 10%. But I thought his starter was gigantic. Almost like 65%. Yeah, I was like, this guy, that guy to me felt so safe, even though he was younger and all the questions about, you know, creativity and all those things.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
But I was like, man, this guy, like, I just don't see him failing. Like, I just thought his and a guy like Richardson in the same class, it was like, I see a 20% star, maybe 25%, but I also see a 30% bust. And, and same thing, Caleb, for me had a huge starter, a good chunk start a star. And then just, I just thought he had a small bus potential. Like it was just again, but he still had it.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
All these guys have it. Even a guy like may, who I is one of my highest graded quarterbacks I've ever had. Um, they're going to have that, but it's all for me chasing that percentage of star because that's what you need to win.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
I stole it from a basketball park. Pigskin pie or something? I don't know. I stole from Candice Hoopis and a guy that now works for the Nuggets, actually. He's like an analytics guy there. And he, and I just always liked the terminology for it. And that's kind of what I applied. Yeah. But his, the one that stuck with me, it was Zach Levine was the guy did an analytics thing on him.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
And he goes, Hey, I got to bring up the comparisons. And like number eight on the comparison chart was Michael Jordan. She was talking about it. He was like, it was all these busts. And then, but then the last, like three of the comparisons of his like stat stuff was like, well, oh, you got to look at the athletes and all that. And then that was the argument about Zach Levine.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
It was like, he might wash out of the league in two years, but he has that 20% chance or 10% chance of being a star, an all-star, yada, yada. So that's the player that that stuck out for me. But like a guy like Nick's, He was my quarterback five, and I viewed him more as a second rounder. I still thought he got overdrafted.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
The argument with him, or maybe my argument against him, was he had a ton of starts that But he still was so skittish. I thought his footwork was really bad. It's still kind of as iffy. He just has wonky plays. He's a little too safe with the football. Down the field, his accuracy is not great. But I still saw a starter in there. Even my write-up with him was like, I view him as...
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
I think I had like, so I did bench starter. Bench to me is like a Jacoby Brissett, you know, or Gardner Minshew, maybe a spot starter kind of type. I had him kind of in that tier, like where it was like, okay, there's a big chunk starter and bench, like 80%. And then like a 10%, maybe 15%.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
Yeah, you're right. He was. And Sean Payton's been in his bag. Like he really has. The run game's good. The Broncos defense is sick. I think he is, he has improved from what he looked like week one, which was like, oh my God, you can't play this guy. to they chopped out play calls for him too. So they've stopped using motion so much. So again, that's good coaching.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
Hey, let's make sure you're on straight and narrow. But from week two, I thought he was not going to make it after a rookie year. I thought we had a, you know, just a Josh Rosen situation going on. Now I'm like, okay, you could be a tangible starter. So like he's reaching that kind of maybe middle tier that I thought he could reach. Josh Rosen.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
I'm going to build suspense. And then I feel like, yeah, I went with because I'm so boring sometimes. I just went with things I'm enjoying in this NFL season. You're a positive guy. I try to be. I try to be. I keep my negativity to myself most of the time. But yes, I want because there's a lot too much about how like sports are worse than they used to be and all that.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
And it's like, no, it's the opposite. We should enjoy what these freaks are doing every week. Yeah. And so I want things that I enjoyed enjoy watching this season. And I'm starting with number five. And this is actually kind of a negative one. This is telling the Cowboys I told you so.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
That's something I've been enjoying this season, going, you guys thought you can draft two offensive linemen and start them and not have a running back and not have a second pass catcher. And you thought you can not have a defensive tackle that can stop the run. You thought Eric Kendricks could still play linebacker. And you thought you were contending and all in. And we told you so.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
And so that is something I've been enjoying because it's just it's as glaring as the light through Jerry world right now. All the warts that they have have just been popping. I know pimples pop, but, you know, same thing. They just are just as shiny, as glossy as you can imagine. Even little things. Not really a little thing. Dak Prescott gets hurt. Why aren't you playing Trey Lance?
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
You traded a fourth for him. Just give him some run. You guys aren't winning the Super Bowl this year. Figure out what you got. Like, you know, like this is why you trade for him. The Mingo trade, Jonathan Mingo, you know, like day late and dollar short. But also on top of that, Mingo, even if you look at his height, weight, speed stuff, he's like a gadget slot guy.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
You know who's best in the slot? CeeDee Lamb. You're right. Like, why are you making that trade? Like, you're making it worse. That's not actually a trade that's actually going to have a tangible effect on your team. So, yeah, I guess.

Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
You know, that NFL tape doesn't matter. Hey, look at what he did at Ole Miss that last year. I know. And guys like Mazie Smith, when he gets drafted, they're like, no, he's going to stop the run for us. It's like, he didn't do that in college. What makes you think he's going to get better at it in the NFL? They let a guy like Jonathan Hankins go. He's just a role-playing nose tackle.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
But he was like their most significant player on the defense. And then they're just like, yeah, we don't need him, actually. He was like, no, you do. You do need him on your defense. So... I guess this is kind of a negative thing, but it is something I've been enjoying.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
Number four is surprising defenses. Improved defenses. This is a way. So this was my Eagles one, one of them. But teams like the Eagles, the Chargers, the Broncos, the Lions, even teams like the Chiefs, who had a really good defense last year, are even better this year. The Bills, who were expected to have a little drop-off on defense. Who could have guessed that one?
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
Yeah, and they are just cooking and doing a great job there. So I'll start with the Eagles, and this is more Vic Fangio going like, oh, yeah, this is why everyone used to want to hire Vic Fangio. And they have a lot of good young players and new faces really stepping up for them, and it's been really fun. Quinion Mitchell, their first-round pick, corner from Toledo has been great.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
As a rookie, rookie corner is really hard.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
We have. And just really the last like two, three years, rookies, it used to be like year two, you expect a corner to be like even baseline. It's like a rookie in the NBA.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
Like even if they like average, you're like, hell yeah. Like that's good. But with Quinnian, it's like he's no, that's a good starter as a rookie. And he takes it to guys, which is really fun. Like he can actually go against number ones. But then Cooper Dejean, who plays in the slot for them, has been tremendous.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
Like both of these two guys are going to be on the short list for defensive rookie of the year at the end of the year. And that was their first two picks. And Dajin from the slot, it's a very important position in this defense. How much they have to do in the run game, how much they have to blitz because of the soft kind of coverages they run. And he has been awesome.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
Some huge plays on fourth down. Tackles Jamar Chase in space when they play the Bengals. Last week, he tackled CeeDee Lamb in space. No one really does that to those two guys. And there he is as a rookie acting like it's nothing. So those two rookies, I mean, even other guys, Milton Williams is a guy that was a role player for them, is now a starting defensive lineman.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
He's in a contract year and he's going to get paid. So like even a guy like that, Jalen Carter, defensive tackle, looks like a future all pro. He's fantastic. And then Zach Bond, who's a linebacker retread that he's a former Wisconsin guy. And mostly he played as like an undersized pass rusher. And Vic Fangio is like, ah, we're going to probably off ball. And he looks like a pro bowler.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
And it's like an inspired player. Vic Fangio is back. He's fully back. Fully back. And maybe Howie hit a little magic this year. Howie was getting a little like, okay, you know, that's how we always nail it. And then this year, it looks like he's just rejuvenated all of that. So, yeah.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
They're definitely giving up 45 tonight.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
I mean, but even like stat wise, there's seven in DVOA. And then there's, so I look at a thing, success rate and explosive play rate and I combine them. People want me to call it sex rate, but then someone today said, let's call it suplex rate. And I was like, oh yeah, there we go. But they're second in that right now.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
And then like even the other defenses I mentioned, the Broncos defense is a lot of fun.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
Yeah, they just have a lot of good, you know, like Patrick Sertan is if he wasn't hurt, he'd be up there with defense player of the year. Like we'd be talking about him. He's the best corner in the game. He's incredible. But then like their other corner, Riley Moss is good.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
And it's not even just in the sense that he's, you know, the first white corner since Jason Sehorne, like he's a legitimately good player. So it went from a bit to like, oh, no, no, he's just good. We don't have to make jokes anymore. But they, like, so they have those guys and they just play press, man, take it to them. Vance Joseph is really aggressive.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
He's a lot like, he has some Wade Phillips to him. So it's a lot of like, okay, we're in man coverage. That guy's blocking blitz. Then they call green dogs and they are just show, they just, they don't want you to breathe.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
but you have to really perform to beat them yeah they're they're outstanding i mean they gave up 70 points in a game last year and now every metric they're top five and it's legit it's very legit zach allen has had a good year um defensive lineman there the fourth watt brother uh no it's they're they're a very good unit the chargers too has been very impressive chargers yeah not surprising at all that they would be good but i think they're even a little better than
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
Plus money Mahomes? Hell yeah. That's what you do. No, and the Chiefs have, I'm trying to find a better term than this, but natural answers too. The Bills play all this cover too. And then Mahomes now is like, okay, you know, he's just going to nickel and dime. It might be a Juju Smith-Schuster game as far as underneath throws if he's healthy. It might be a Travis Kelsey decent game as well.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
But the Chiefs, their offense is just so brutally efficient this year. It's just, you know, it's just they're going to take their five-yard gains and you're going to like it. And that, I mean, that's no defense has stopped it so far. So the bill is playing cover too. They're not very aggressive. It's kind of like, well, you need to be aggressive. You need to like take the fight to the chiefs.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
Otherwise they're just going to, they're fine taking these five, six yard gains and punching you in the face over and over.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
Number three, and this is kind of time just even talking about the bills, but kind of a cop out here because I want to talk about a few things. AFC juggernaut quarterbacks. This is Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, Joe Burrow, Patrick Mahomes, Justin Herbert, the big five.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
So back. I was worried he'll be back. I was a little scared, especially since I have some Dynasty shares in him that I maybe got a little worried about it. But how about the vibes with Harbaugh and Herbert? The buddy comedy with this is just amazing. It's genuine. And you can see Harbaugh really kind of... Did you see any of the videos from this past week?
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
and how the game balls work, like, oh, are they, are they giving it to the owner? All right. But you know, it's, but no, that's, that's a very real thing. Like who speaks after the coach who like even that Harbaugh video, they, they, or the chargers video, they're like, Hey, Herbert, He's like, Justin, just talk to us.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
And then Herbert kind of gave the little like two second speech, which is perfect. But again, it's like a little, you know, microcosm of like what each locker room is. No, that's such a great point.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
Like just, just having an energy sometimes works or just being competent. Like with Harbaugh, it's not like they're doing anything crazy. They're just competent. They don't, they don't get penalized. They don't turn the ball over. All their scheme stuff is sound. The defensive coordinator is a star, Jesse Minter. Yeah.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
He's gone very soon. Yeah. They get him for another year. It's a miracle. But, but again, it's, Sometimes it's just having a high baseline. And when you have a dude at quarterback, that's kind of enough. Like even talking about the Broncos with Bo Nix, Bo Nix isn't making mistakes and the rest of the team is competent.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
So it's like, yeah, now they might be a playoff team because they're just not idiots. Like they're above the idiot line, the Mendoza line of coaching.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
That's real. Well, that's what turned me on to... I was always kind of an optimist with them, but Dan Campbell's lines was his first year with them was even they're getting their faces battered in every week. That sideline was into it. Shanahan's first year with the 49ers in 2017. Bad team. And defense is trying to tackle everyone. Everyone's going nuts about touchdown. You also...
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
There's buy-in or just being locked in. You can see sometimes when someone scores and how other players react to that because they're aware that that call was happening. They're aware that that design was meant to do that. So again, it's just reading in between the lines of like, are they locked in? Are they not? I mean, you just watch the Bears. You can just tell like, oh, okay.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
I could segue to my number two, the Cardinals. Let's hear it. They're my number two thing for this list. The thing that I'm enjoying most is just the Cardinals in general. Every aspect of the Cardinals I enjoy watching because they are exactly what we're talking about here. Everybody's locked in. I mean, Marvin Harrison Jr. 's fist pumping after a run for a touchdown where he has to make a block.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
So that's the number four pick overall who's probably been a star since he was 15. Doing the dirty work and celebrating someone else scoring. And then I look over, no offense to the guy, because I really liked him, Roman Dunzay for the Bears. something happens, he's like, all right. And which is not how Roman Doomsday was in college. Right.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
It just kind of speaks to what the buy-in is for each of these teams or each of these players in the units. But yeah, thank you for segmoing me to the Cardinals because on the last show I was on, I was pretty optimistic about them. And this, this hopefully was what I was talking about, but offense, like they're looking like a top five offense. Were you expecting them to be this physical?
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
That's the thing that I was surprised by. That's what they bought into. Last year, the offensive line played way above, punched way above their weight. Having James Conner kind of sets the tone too. But just they're buying with the tight ends. You know, they had Elijah Higgins last year and Trey McBride, and then they drafted Tip Ryman in the third round.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
And I was like, oh, okay, I see what you guys are leaning into. like we're not getting like finesse tight ends. We're actually getting like brawlers that can actually do stuff. And they drafting Paris Johnson jr. Their left tackle from last year. They're all tone setter types. So even their other receiver, Michael Wilson is he's big and we'll do dirty work.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
And that's why I was pretty optimistic about him was they're doing a lot of everything was sound like conceptually and sound, but in very traditional in some senses, but just enough sound,
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
modernizations you know it's like watching scream for the first time it's like oh yeah this this is a slasher movie okay but you're doing the meta thing okay that's cool like they just do a little bit of motion a little bit of tweaks and inverting roles they kind of their own they do a little bit of everything in the run game but it's really sound they're not running against bad boxes um kyler is playing fantastic right now so our friend mina
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
I, man, I mean, he's, he's got a better argument than most. I'll put it that way. I have those AFC, the five AFC quarterbacks that I just mentioned basically as my top five. So I think Kyler would probably be the one, you know, next, next one in, you know, first four out. I mean, Kyler, QBR is just one stat, but Kyler is second. in the NFL right now in QBR.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
Lamar Jackson's one, Cowher's two, and Joe Burrow's three. You know, like he, and this is the most he's like playing real quarterback. They give him, you know, this is kind of continuing my Kingsbury offense stuff.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
was that has a high floor but the ceiling i think is lower because of what they can get to and what they ask of their players with kyler and drew petzing their offense coordinator they said no you're playing quarterback like we're putting you under center you are killing plays you are pointing out who who has who in protection and if there's some rough stretches early in this year even last year even some of the quote-unquote good games now i would say the last like three four weeks it's like you
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
see it like you can see the confidence really bubbling with him he's been under center 30% of the time this year the first four and a half years of his career he was under center for 125 dropbacks total in his first four and a half years he's been under center for 55 dropbacks this year so almost he's already almost getting a half yeah so 125 in four and a half years under Cliff Kingsbury
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
And half a year, Drew Petzing, 55 just this year. That's real... That ties into the run game. That is tying into their play action games really good. And like when I mentioned their... Little tweaks they do, they're kind of modern. I don't say modern, just understanding what to do. Like a bootleg, like just a normal bootleg that everyone runs.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
Usually you run it with zone, where everybody steps the same way. You remember the old Texans, Gary Kubiak videos they would show? What they do, and it's not new, but they're one of the few teams that leans into it. They pull a guard when they run a bootleg.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
and most teams try to avoid doing that because it can get a little dicey up front and everything but they're well coached they do only against the right fronts and it ties in with to what their run game is because they pull so many guys and once they pull that it attracts the linebackers you should watch against the jets it was comical the jets linebackers are sprinting with it because the guards pulling so again they're confident that they can do this little tweak
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
But again, it sets up everything because they're going under center, because they're running the ball well. They can get to that stuff and it turns into 15-yard gashes to Marvin Harrison or to Trey McBride, who Trey McBride's also playing like a top three tight end. So that also helps too. But it's just a, and then shoot, the defense is fun. It's crazy.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
Insane.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
No. And I know I looked at the injury report after that because I remember being like, did I forget someone's hurt? Right. Like, you know, is Kyler out or something? But no, that was just, you know, no one watches the Cardinals. And then we get updates about Jets warmups.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
What's your number one? Well, and this is tying into a little bit what the Cardinals are doing and other teams have kind of mentioned, but it's the run game and the running back renaissance that we're going through this year. This is what has juiced me up about the NFL this year. The Cardinals are a part of this and their run game, but...
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
This is not only just the investment teams have made in running backs, which we have seen with Derrick Henry, Saquon Barkley, even other guys that were signed over the years. James Conner was a free agent addition for the Cardinals. We go one after another. Josh Jacobs with the Packers. But also the first rounders teams have made on the running backs have been paying dividends.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
Bijan Robinson, Shamir Gibbs with the Lions. All these teams. You got to throw Najee in there. I would throw him in. I think Najee's been pretty good. Najee went from, I actually, it was funny, I actually was like, he should not be getting the ball anymore. And it feels like when I said that on my podcast after that, he has just run harder than he ever has in his career.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
Right, yeah, just me, you know, football 301, check it out. But the Steelers though, they're part of this too. I've been always an Arthur Smith apologist. And now with their offensive line, Zach Frazier, their center, is legitimately one of the best rookies in the NFL, like at any position. And then they have another rookie right guard, Mason McCormick, who's playing well.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
Isaac Sumolo, their left guard, has come back from injury. Like now you can feel that kind of that beef coming back with their run game, which has been a lot of fun along with Russell Wilson Moonballs. But the Bills run game is really good. I've been calling it spread bully because they'll spread people out or and then they'll just run it down your throat.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
James Cook has done a lot better as being kind of more of a sound running back. Ray Davis is really punching people in the face. And it's really just taking advantage of defenses are terrified of Josh Allen. So their bills are just like, all right, we'll take six yards.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
Yeah, they're on the short list here. But Ravens, I already mentioned them. The Eagles realizing, oh yeah, Saquon Barkley's good. Let's just get under center and hand them the ball. No, the Panthers is a great example. They invested in their guards. And that was to help out Bryce Young and keep the pocket, the interior of the pocket clean.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
But then now it's paying dividends with the, you know, the Trouba Hubber and then they can just pound the rock 20 times. I mean, this really, the defenses are giving you this. So you have to invest in it. So what does this mean for the drafts?
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
I think it's more, it's still going to be like maybe, well, this class is of course kind of a, you have Ashton Jeanty from Boise State, who I have number eight on my big board. I just did a podcast with Dan Brugler, who from The Athletic, he has him at number six overall on his big board. Oh my God. He's incredible.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
I don't know if you've watched him yet, but he is one of the most fun watches in any sports. So yeah, Ashton Gentry, running back from Boise State. But then there's a lot of day two backs. And it's just a difference now where these guys have to play all three downs. The only star running back that doesn't do pass protection is Derrick Henry. But that's Derrick Henry.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
He can get away with it because he's 6'5", 250 and we can give him the ball 40 times. So we're kind of getting to this new thing where it's like, yeah, you need, you can't just go, oh, running backs don't matter in the sense that, yeah, or I'm sorry, you can say running backs don't matter. Don't take them in the first round, but you can't just ignore the position. Like you have to step.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
Like Dallas State, you still have to invest. Look at the Vikings who, like Sam Darnold's had a good year, you know, turning into a pumpkin a little bit right now. Defense has got a lot of headlines with Brian Flores. They also took Aaron Jones. They signed Aaron Jones. Yep. Totally changed their run game because he's explosive.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
And now they don't have to rely on another 20-yard Justin Jefferson play. Okay, Aaron Jones can maybe get us a 15-yard gain that we didn't have before. So you have to invest in these positions that even it used to be kind of a throwaway. But now I think day two, it's going to turn into like, oh, no, we got to take another guy.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
Even if we have one, we need two if we're going to really invest in this game.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
Wait, I have a question based off your thing.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
Yeah. Yeah, I am. I was pretty high on him in this draft. He was one of my more favorite backs. Non-standard. Oh, man. Well, Tyrone Tracy, everyone's got him now. No, he's already happened. Yeah, he's already swooped up by everybody. God, no.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
I do. I do, as he's a Wisconsin guy. I've been hearing about how young he is for about five years now. Yeah, no, he, oh, Roshon Johnson maybe for the Bears as maybe just a flyer because I don't know, like they invested in DeAndre Swift, but it's kind of like DeAndre Swift's making a lot of mistakes. So like in just other things and Roshon Johnson's a little safer.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
So maybe he kind of takes a few more touches there. So maybe that's one, you know, kind of looking on, you know, the kind of fifth tier running backs. Yeah, if you're throwing some dart throws. Ray Davis is the other one for the Bills, but he's already probably been sweetened by a lot of teams.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
That's the easiest position to scout. Yeah. It's like, it's, yeah, it's, it's the one.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
Oh, you keep getting positive yards. This is good. Yeah. No. And, and in this class too, and next year's draft class, there's just a ton of day two guys like, and it's, so there's kind of a rejuvenation of that, that position that's happening right now.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
Oh, no. Oh, I'm panicked. They need a players-only meeting. They miss Kyle Anderson. You know, they miss him so bad. My guy, Slow Mo, they really miss him right now because he was such a glue guy for them as far as just the second unit defense and just also an auxiliary ball handler and all that.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
And I still have faith, but I was also wanting to make the freaking semis for the in-season tournament so I can watch them here in Vegas. Like, you know, can we keep the NBA Cup? Can we like, can you guys focus on the NBA Cup so I can watch you here in Vegas? Yeah.

Uh, but no, I am a little worried because there, there's a little bit too much of this kind of lackadaisicalness, uh, especially on the defensive end. And Rudy Gobert has kind of said, oh yeah, it's on me, but you know, that's Rudy.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
Um, and it doesn't help when Carl Anthony Towns is dropping 40 something, uh, uh, in New York, even though they lost, uh, still, you know, uh, that, that, that doesn't help. But so I have a little bit more panic, even though I've been, I'm still optimistic about this team because I just love Anthony Edwards so, so much.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
Oh, that is, it's one of my biggest beliefs in sports is you got to zag when everyone else is zigging and going, we need swing. You know, we need all these swing guys need all these wings. And they were like, no, we're getting three centers. And we're going to just go down your throat because you're like a, you know, triple option team in college. Shoot, we only face this once a year.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
Like, oh God, all right, how do we defend this? Oh God, they're so unique. And yeah, in a playoff time when you get the repeat matchups, but the thing is who's still the, you know, well, other than the Thunder, the Nuggets. they had the best counter for their nuggets. They could just keep throwing size at them. One after guy, Jokic and all the guys.
The Bill Simmons Podcast
Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
No, I don't. Well, for me, my NBA fandom really starts after the All-Star game because that's what I'm like. It's perfect. Super Bowl happens. NBA All-Star game. Okay, now I can start paying attention to other things. But now they're on a lot more national TV games and so I can't avoid them. And so, yeah, I do have some doubt, but I am an optimist overall. I do trust Edwards. I do trust Finch.

Part 2: Eagles/C-Words Reax, Drake Maye Fever, the RB Boom and Million Dollar Picks With Joe House and Nate Tice
I wouldn't say it's rooting against, but I would just say, you know, Knicks fans get ready for some bad fouls at the worst times and get ready for some frustrating... You're in the honeymoon phase. Get ready for some frustrating turnovers where you're like, weren't you a coach's kid? Yeah.

You know, get ready for those on top of the moments of brilliance where you watch one of the best offensive big men you'll ever see in most skilled guys. Yeah. But yeah, he's a very frustrating player. I'll tell you, Carl, I've... I've had some swear words of Carl Anthony Townsend to myself while watching him.

Seahawks with the points was the worst bet. Well, I would say it's more of a bad beat than a bad bet.

GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
I mean, are we counting all the ones that he probably made preseason that included one of these two teams to win it? Because if that's the case, it's way over. I mean, we're in the mid-double digits. No, Mikey, I'm including those.

He grabbed the early line. He grabbed the hypothetical line. He grabbed the money line.

I like to think so. Otherwise, what are we doing here?
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
Go ahead, Mike. Speaking of longest rush, I feel like it doesn't matter what that number is for Saquon Barkley because he's going to get it on the first carry. Saquon Barkley longest rush. Last few times I've seen it in the high 20s. Are you still thinking that they're going to be able to do that this time around against the Chiefs?
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
Billy did. I think Bear tried just as much.

I also love the idea of him taking all that money, putting it in blackjack, and he's getting aces, and then he's got to split them. And then he gets aces again, and he splits it again, and he winds up losing everything.

Bear, I can't believe we haven't asked you yet. Who are you taking in the game, though? I don't think he knows yet. I think he has an idea of what he wants, but he's waiting for the right number. So you're aware this will not air until Tuesday, just so you know, Bear, okay?
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
No. They'd have to restructure it a little bit. But if he wants to be there, they'll make it work. Bear, he's the best option they have.

GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
I had to, man. You do that when you're my age, which is 50. My better days are behind me. I used to be a contender, especially at the bar. No, but that's kind of what I had to do. I looked at my schedule and I was like, huh. I don't know if I could do this with a headache.

So I used to go to the Manning Academy here in Louisiana. So I used to come every year in New Orleans in January. And so, like, It's kind of fun actually doing it for work now. Yes. Every time I'm here, I'm like, oh, yeah, the city rocks. Right. People here are really nice and cool and fun. So I'm loving it so far.

GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
That's kind of, you know, I don't know if you've been to the Combine in Indy. No. That's why I never think they'll move it. Right. Because everything is like three blocks from each other. Yes. Bars included, restaurants, but just like where the facilities are. Yes. And that's just such an underrated. No one wants to get in the car for five to ten minutes and do everything.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
So I think that's what's great about this right now.

GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
That and Prime 47. Oh, really? Which is a restaurant.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
No, it's been around. It's just that time doesn't exist in Prime 47. Oh, really? Yeah, yeah. It's the same lighting. Next thing you know. Yeah, same lighting no matter what. And the thing that happens during the combine is just a lot of guys, a lot of coaches and personnel guys, they're interviewing until 11 p.m.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
So, like, really the networking, quote, unquote, the convention part of the Combine, it's, like, starts at midnight. It's, like, not even just drinking-wise. It's just, like, people just finally are stepping out and actually can, like, hang out and stuff. So it's kind of a surreal thing where it's, like, all right, 11 o'clock, guess I'll start out.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
You know, I feel like I'm in New York or Miami, actually. Yeah.

The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz

GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
I did meet you there, and I was like, okay, you did. I was surprised. No, no, I remember, Nate. Yes, yes. I normally don't, to be honest with you. No, that's the thing. I felt bad for people there because you could tell everyone's excited at Vegas. And then after day four, and you guys had some crazy weather too. It was freezing. And day four, I got to go home every night.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
And I just saw everybody worn out. It's just being in those casinos. It's like the little city states and you can't get out.

Yeah, I know. That's what's so great. My hotel's two blocks away.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
So we've got Charles McDonald, who I know has been on some Levitard shows. Yeah, friend of the show. Yeah, friend of the show. So him and I and Matt Harmon, who does reception perception. His background's a lot more in fantasy, but really we talk about X's and O's, scheme stuff. Really a lot of deep dive stuff. Charles helps me kind of come out of my little lair sometimes.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
Actually, I got to be a normal person about some of it. But really just like there's a lot of like what happened, when happened. We're really trying to go why, how. I think a lot of people like when they can just point out one thing to their buddy at the bar. They go like, hey, hey, this linebacker's pretty good. Or hey, they like run this coverage or something of that sort.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
My background, I kind of done everything in football, played, coached, scouted. I was a ball boy. I think with just all that has kind of led me to kind of go like, oh, maybe this. I was around a lot smarter people through osmosis. I go, maybe look out for this. Maybe look for this guard that's weak against this blitz. And I think that's kind of like a nice angle for us.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
It's a lot of fun to kind of dive into.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
And that's what people think the All-22, you know, the big X and O stuff where you can see all the players on there. People think that's like, oh, you guys don't know what you're looking at and stuff. But you have to rewind it a million times because... Like, you don't always see what the guard is doing from the sideline angle. You don't see downfield what the safety is doing.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
And that play was brilliant. I mean, we had 500 backlash breakdowns on that play and everything. But that's what's really cool, especially with blitz stuff, is that there's layers to it. And there's rule breakers. And that's why I love Spagnuolo. I was a former offensive guy. But watch him. He breaks rules. And that's what – it's a total F me, F you kind of thing.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
And he's able to do it. And you saw like that perfect fourth down play. It was like, yeah, that's what Spaggs does to you.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
He does the 5-0-1 thing. Yes. That you're not – you are prepared for it, but it would be like a leap of faith to get there for an offense. And that's what's really cool when you start dissecting it.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
That's right. And his reputation in my mind now, speaking to this, is he went from head coach retread, okay, interesting defense coordinator, to now I consider him one of the greatest defense coordinators of all time.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
And I truly mean this. I think that some of the game plans, just like Belichick, should go to Canton. Because he's one of the best game plan coordinators. Once the playoffs start, it's so week to week. As far as like, all right, that game plan, throw it out because we're starting a whole new one.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
And now we've got all 18 weeks to look at the previous film as opposed to maybe four in the middle of the season. Him and Andy Reid on the opposite side are the best. And now they have a bye week. So that's how I look at it too. It's like, all right, you probably paid pretty well too. And everybody now has the respect level has gone through the roof.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
It's not just week to week. It's once we hit playoff time, they have those hyper-specific game plans. So maybe that's the best way to put it. They're the ones that are able to create these one-off game plans, the one-off plays that's like, oh, that was cool. I even come back to two years ago when these two teams played in the Super Bowl.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
Remember the kind of back-and-forth touchdowns, the motions and stuff? Because Andy Reid was able to watch every Eagles game where the coaches were from the whole regular season. And they took those plays, which are popular, but they took it from the Jaguars doing it against the Eagles in like week four. And that's the difference is they put in the work and go, oh, that's interesting.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
We're going to put it in now. And that's what the extra bye week does. It gives you the time to do it. Interesting. Yeah, that week to week. I keep saying week to week. I should say that specific playoff game plans, they are the best at it.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
He does, right? I mean, they keep winning and everything.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
I thought one thing. underrated aspect of Sirianni was the year before they won that first Super Bowl run, so that would have been 21, he benched himself as a play caller. And usually you'd be like, ha, ha, ha. But I thought the humility to go, no, Steichen, you got the plays. I'm going to bench him.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
Because they were struggling the first four or five weeks, I want to say it was, and then they had a bye. And they launched from there, and then they got A.J. Brown and continued the next year. Steichen's now a head coach.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
Usually what you see is the opposite. Oh, I'm taking it away from him. He's fine. He's the first one in front of me in the fire going, yeah. He's the human meat shield for me. And I kind of look back then. I respect him for that because not a lot of head coaches would do that, especially ones that you know, finally get their first head coaching job. I'm like, I'm going to be a play caller.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
Look at me. I'm the next McVay Shanahan.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
So that's one thing where I was like, hey, I mean, there is something to that. And there's something to being like, I hate the term, but the CEO type that kind of gets everyone organized. And if they're, I mean, they keep winning games.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
I mean, they should be giving him a bunch of vowels in it.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
Another one got ran out. Like, Doug, Andy Reid got ran out. I know. I know. Sirianni can still win something. Hey, going to two and winning one is a lot better than a lot of other coaches. I know, even if you end up as the Larry Coker of NFL coaches, it's not the worst.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
And that's how I feel about him a little bit, too. It's like, hey, yeah, he's taking over a Ferrari, but he's keeping it on the road. And I know every time they lose, it's the funniest little, like, You know, everybody starts dropping rumors and gossip and everything. But I haven't gotten a lot of that lately because I think things have been pretty good in Philly.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
I think it's going to be a lot of long drives, too. Both of these defenses are top five in allowing explosive plays, and the fact that they don't allow them, I should say. And I think that you can be methodical against both of them. I think the Rams game was interesting against this Eagles defense, where they were really doing a lot of at-you runs around a concept called duo.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
But what it is is just vertical, just power, basically, without anyone pulling. And you can do that. If you're willing to live with four, five, six-yard gains, yeah. And the Chiefs are able to do that. That's what they want to do. They're not very explosive anyways, but they're hyper-efficient. So I think that's a lot of long drives. There's a line I've been kind of giving.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
I think this is going to be the shortest Super Bowl. I agree. Even with the halftime show.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
That's it. And both teams want to do that. The Chiefs want to go, well, we don't want them hitting big play after big play on us. So I am really curious. My eyes are going to Spaggs versus Jalen Hurts and the Eagles off the line. It really is because... Spags is one of the best, like, he's one of the biggest blitzers, but he runs a lot of zone blitzes.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
And that's the difference than man coverage blitzes. And Jalen Hurts has been better against the blitz, but if you remember last year in the playoffs, Todd Bowles and the Bucs, they kind of exposed him a little bit. And he's not good against zone blitzes, though, because it's just a little more confusing. It's a little more exotic.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
So that's one thing where it's like, all right, if they get an explosive play off of it, that's going to decide the game. But I think Spags are going to try and bait them into that one turnover that can totally swing the game.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
I'm fine with that. This is more of my language, so we're good.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
Yeah, so I'll tell you one little inside baseball play. It's a coverage called Palms, and it's a quarters coverage, so two high shell. And on it, it's basically a defense trying to run cover two and cover four at the same time. And what you're trying to do is bait the quarterback into throwing to the slot, like a quick out route, and thinking that you can just have nice open space over there.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
Jalen Hurts loves throwing those.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
The Chiefs are one of the best defenses at running this. So they'll blitz. Quarterback will think he's hot. And there's the corner who looks like he's running with the outside receiver. He'll turn around and be there to pick off and blow up the slot or the tight end. I feel like that kind of play is going to be the one that decides the game. It's what the Chiefs do.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
It also baits Hurts into throwing what he wants to throw. But this is where I love this stuff is that, okay, I know what you know what I know what you know. All right, does Kellen Moore go like, all right, now throw the vertical route right behind it? Oh, I like that.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
And that's what I, if he does, if I see that little hole shot, you know, that little 15 to 20 yarder towards the sideline, I'll be like, oh, the Eagles got some stuff. If I see that pick or that batted ball or that blow up on a quick out route, that's where I'm like, okay, the Chiefs got some stuff.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
There's going to be those little kind of indicators like who's kind of maybe has the mental edge right away.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
No, I'm not. I'm doing the same thing, by the way.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
That's right. And there's nothing where I look at with this Chiefs team where I'm like, oh, that's a glaring weakness. Everything's solid. They just don't create explosives. But the thing is, Mahomes can be methodical and can nickel and dime you. And you got Andy Reid on a bye week, and you got Steve Spagnuolo on a bye week. I'd never go against it. But I do. Eagles can run the ball, stop the run.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
Create explosive plays, stop explosive plays. That's a really good formula, too. No doubt. How's the Land Cruiser set, by the way?
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
Oh, my God. I know. I know. But that's what I said. They literally have X's and O's on it. I know. That is so good. No, it's great. I know. They're doing a great job there.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
Ball boy was pretty great. I was in high school, middle school. I was with those old Vikings teams with Moss and Culpepper and stuff. Oh, wow. Yeah, I saw some real s**t. Oh, my God. Yeah, some of the greatest s**t. Yeah, so Moss lateral stuff.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
Yeah, so, yeah. Never shutting up. Yeah, Terry O'Smith. I said that respectfully to Chris Carter. He was just wired that way. Well, that's also a warp in my line of thinking is that I watched Randy Moss, Dante Culpepper, Chris Carter play. John Randall, Kevin Williams, all these guys. And I'm like, oh, yeah, every receiver is like Randy Moss. Yeah, right.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
And then I've never seen someone near that ever in my life. Not even close. Not even close. It's like, oh, there's a lot more Nate Burlesons than Randy Mosses. I love Nate, too.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
He doesn't deserve any of this. No, but being a ball boy, even though I was making like $20 a week, it was invaluable. I remember the Vic play where two guys ran into each other in the rankings. I was there for that one. I saw a lot of kind of cool moments. I saw Brett Favre play five feet for me, Peyton Manning. Amazing. That probably is the best because maybe I was also 16.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
And it comes with zero expectations too. Just get the ball there. Just throw it on your hand. Make sure it spirals. You can't throw overhand to refs.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
So there's a preferred throwing style. Time out.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
Okay. They get mad at you if you throw it overhand because some of them can't catch. Okay. So you have to throw an underhand throw, and they prefer with a little lob.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
So they can adjust to it and everything like that.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
So, no, but, like, and I was a quarterback, so, like, there's times I was like, fuck it. Let it rip. Let it rip. And one time a ref actually loved that because it was like a no-huddle two-minute situation. He's like, thanks for getting the ball out there. And I was like, oh, God, I thought I was going to be fired. But, no, it's true. I one time threw it overhand, and a ref lectured me. Really?
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
He's like, do not. throw it overhand. He's like, you do not know what my hands are like.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
I know. I wish. Who's the ref? I know. Well, a lot of those guys are retired now, too. So, yeah, I know. Has there been a ref? It might have been Hockley. It might have been Hockley. Oh, really?
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
Oh, really? This is fascinating. Nothing personal he did to me, but one thing if I were to ask. All I want is ball boy stories from you. Go ahead. bulky for a reason. He knows he's on TV. One thing with Hockley I always notice. Okay, so there's the orange guy that says TV timeout. Takes the pause. Offense will be in a huddle sometimes and everything.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
A lot of refs just go into the quarterback like, hey, five seconds. And then back out of there. Hockley goes... He had five seconds and just hangs because he knows the camera. He's going to be, when I come back from career show, where they always show the offense breaking the huddle. Yes. There's Hockley always going, and then he goes. Showing off the guns.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
Every quarterback in the league knows that. So everyone was like, yeah. So when I've been on the league, people were kind of busting balls about it. So I got to make sure to get that extra couple seconds in there.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
A couple seconds of pose, right? Show off the tries.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
Who was the defensive coordinator for the Giants?
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
Spags is an absolute rebuttal. I would say Mahomes is the better rebuttal.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
Right. You just said the whole point is to keep Mahomes off the field. It is. And I think it's hard to keep Mahomes off the field because... Spags.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
Right. How does that make any sense? What do you mean, how does it make sense?
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
GBF- Super Week: Welcome to Radio Row!
Nobody. But here's my question. Does Jason leave Travis sad in the locker room to go party with the Eagles if the Eagles win? Because I say yes.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: The Inconclusive Legacy Game (feat. Nate Tice)
Most interested? I just want to see where the quarterbacks go, as always. I'm basic. You know, quarterbacks, they draw my eyes. I follow the stars. But thank you for having me. But, yeah, I just want to see where the quarterbacks end up because there's been a lot of hoopla, a lot of flags being planted. I want to see some of those flags go down. Hoopla. All right. Already.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: The Inconclusive Legacy Game (feat. Nate Tice)
We've already gotten to the hoopla.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: The Inconclusive Legacy Game (feat. Nate Tice)
I did not. I did not see A.J. Brown. Was he reading a book? And that's why it's got stolen. No, I was a little distracted reading a book.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: The Inconclusive Legacy Game (feat. Nate Tice)
That'd be a weird mobile alert. I do not. I'm five layers deep in the draft. I'm watching Ashton Gentry versus Nevada Reno. You know, that's what I'm pulling right now. So do not see A.J. Brown doing that.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: The Inconclusive Legacy Game (feat. Nate Tice)
Yeah, I think Steelers kind of seems like the, I don't know, floor is the right word or ceiling where he can go highest. Because I think what happened with the Shadur Sanders experience is that experience, I'll say, because it has been experienced this whole draft cycle, is that I think it was more evaluators started evaluating him.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: The Inconclusive Legacy Game (feat. Nate Tice)
You know, the one, the decision makers, the coaches, the GMs, assistant GMs, the ones up top, they all just kind of went, oh. Okay, this is what you are. And this is good and bad. And I think that the realistic slotting for him is starting at pick 20 into the early second round. And you never know because teams get frisky with quarterbacks, especially in the 20s. Oh, our guy's dropping.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: The Inconclusive Legacy Game (feat. Nate Tice)
We got to move up for there. But I think that at pick 20 is where or 21, I believe it's where the Steelers are, is really where it starts for him. Because I just think that it's realistic expectations for him. I view him as a second rounder or a day two guy, as I would put it, because quarterback grading gets wonky and where they actually go.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: The Inconclusive Legacy Game (feat. Nate Tice)
But that is kind of I think more of the consensus than not what has been kind of like publicly happening. And I think it's kind of catching up and we'll see that on draft night. But the Steelers might be one. But we'll see. It can be all over the place because that's how this class, not just quarterbacks, but the entire class of the draft is there's lack of consensus.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: The Inconclusive Legacy Game (feat. Nate Tice)
So it might be it might be even more wonky on a Thursday and Friday than we usually see.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: The Inconclusive Legacy Game (feat. Nate Tice)
I know. I'm awake. So my eyes are actually open. Usually they're just slits. And then that's all you can usually see with them. So I appreciate that. I appreciate the blue eye compliments.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: The Inconclusive Legacy Game (feat. Nate Tice)
I had a late second grade on his car, so I'm surprised it went this early and that he signed a deal to be dropped in the news this early. I thought the new CBA didn't allow that to be signed before the draft.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: The Inconclusive Legacy Game (feat. Nate Tice)
Hope. I think that's what it is. I think hope is what you're selling on draft night. And I think that's why they've packaged it, stamped it and sold it to everybody. I think that's really what it is. And I think, too, is that college football is so big that you have people that. Hey, we're playing member berries with some of these guys. Hey, this guy, you know him. He won the Heisman.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: The Inconclusive Legacy Game (feat. Nate Tice)
Hey, this guy was really good. A four year starter for your school, which is unlikely now with everyone transferring. But really, that's what you're selling to teams is that all 32 teams have hope. It's the games haven't started. They haven't started 0 and 6. They haven't started 0 and 5. They haven't fired their head coach. Their quarterback isn't actually a lemon player.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: The Inconclusive Legacy Game (feat. Nate Tice)
You know, and I think that's what you're selling. And also the draft now, if you notice, is it's rotating all these cold weather cities. And I think that's been a great thing for actually the NFL. It's like, well, also they make more money off of it. So, of course, it's a great thing for them. But they have gone, oh, the Super Bowl gets the warm weather cities.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: The Inconclusive Legacy Game (feat. Nate Tice)
Well, how do we reward or bring this event to the fans? And I actually think that's been a good part of this. I know it's in Green Bay this year, which is kind of a pain in the ass for most people to get to. But I know being in Pittsburgh, Chicago, Kansas City, Detroit, Detroit, it was awesome last year. So I think that's a part of it, too, is that it's the fan event.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: The Inconclusive Legacy Game (feat. Nate Tice)
While the Super Bowl is the corporate event, the draft is truly the fan event. And I think that's why so many people get hyped up about it.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: The Inconclusive Legacy Game (feat. Nate Tice)
I would say the deepest position is running back. There might be double-digit running backs in the first two days that get selected. I looked it up. The record since the new millennium, since 2000, is 11 in the top three rounds. I think the all-time record since the mid-90s is like 15 or 14, which tells you it's a different age group.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: The Inconclusive Legacy Game (feat. Nate Tice)
But I think that the running back is the deepest class with Ashton Gentry, too, on top. And there might be two or three running backs selected in the first. But edge is another spot and not just edge. D-line in general is pretty good, pretty deep at the top and into the second day.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: The Inconclusive Legacy Game (feat. Nate Tice)
And actually, the position that I think has been kind of overlooked a little bit is that there's some depth that offense aligned. There might not be the really, really great guys at the top of the draft, but there's a lot of players, I would say, late first, early second, that it's a little... juicier than you'd expect than I think it's been kind of made out to be.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: The Inconclusive Legacy Game (feat. Nate Tice)
And then tight end is another position that has talent at the top and on day two. Some interesting guys there, like real tight ends too, not the Mike Kosicki types. I know I'm giving a shout out to Dolphins fans here.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: The Inconclusive Legacy Game (feat. Nate Tice)
What's wrong with those?
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: The Inconclusive Legacy Game (feat. Nate Tice)
yeah too many gaseki references already he's an excellent renaissance i've got no problem with gaseki you're the one who yeah i'm fine with gaseki you're the one who said shit about him i just want him to block once just once just just that's not what he does it's not what he does nate what is the nate what's the comp for travis hunter on both sides of the ball
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: The Inconclusive Legacy Game (feat. Nate Tice)
The one I've gone with for him as a receiver is Chad Ochocinco, Chad Johnson. Chad was a much better route runner, became a very polished route runner. But as far as body type and skills and ball skills and everything like that, they're one to one, really, to me. Travis might be a little more explosive, but... Odell Beckham is another comparison I've heard with him. But that body type, twitchy.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: The Inconclusive Legacy Game (feat. Nate Tice)
He's just an excellent athlete. And then defensively, I've kind of struggled with a few. Asante Samuel Sr. might be one. Champ Bailey is another one, which is maybe the high-end comparison. But the fact that I'm comparing... Chad Johnson and Champ Bailey to this guy. It kind of speaks to how crazy he is. He's really the top tier athlete I've watched in a long time.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: The Inconclusive Legacy Game (feat. Nate Tice)
I grew up around Randy Moss, and he's kind of the top tier top athlete I've ever been around. Bobby Bowden. who coached Randy Moss for a semester, I think before he got kicked off, had to go to Marshall, said, hey, Randy Moss or Deion Sanders to me is the parameter for athleticism. And Randy is a bigger Deion. So I'm saying Travis Hunter is a smaller Randy Moss.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: The Inconclusive Legacy Game (feat. Nate Tice)
Well, then I'm comparing him to Deion, which is kind of in a roundabout way. But no matter what, he's a freak athlete. And there's some rawness with him as a receiver, but just the talent and just his athleticism, that's like he's going to figure it out. That's what's so cool about him.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: The Inconclusive Legacy Game (feat. Nate Tice)
It was a good question. Yeah. I have been, I've been like officially quote unquote evaluating guys for about 10 years now, 11 years. And the best, the top tier running back to me, my favorite running back prospect was Ezekiel Elliott. And then the other guys I would say are in that top tier or Todd Gurley, Bijan Robinson, CMC and Saquon Barkley.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: The Inconclusive Legacy Game (feat. Nate Tice)
And then if I had to like split that tier, it's Zeke, and then it would be Gurley and Saquon and then CMC Bijon, I would put Gentee in that CMC Bijon tier.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: The Inconclusive Legacy Game (feat. Nate Tice)
Yeah, yeah. I grade everything off tiers and then everything. Everything. Oh, that shower was a blue chip shower. Yeah. Yeah. That was a day two toothbrushing. Do you guys remember Nate?
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: The Inconclusive Legacy Game (feat. Nate Tice)
Do you only play one game? I have one stat ever. It's one rush for 17 yards, one touchdown. And 17 is also how many drinks I had that night. So that was to celebrate it. What was the score of that game? Oh, my God. Didn't we drop 80 on them? And then Michael Senior called us out and actually said it was an embarrassment to the sport. It was like 83-20, I think.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: The Inconclusive Legacy Game (feat. Nate Tice)
I was the human victory cigar in college. Wait a minute.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: The Inconclusive Legacy Game (feat. Nate Tice)
Yeah. Oh, yeah. One for one, baby. One touch, one touchdown. That's how we do it.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: The Inconclusive Legacy Game (feat. Nate Tice)
uh no no we're wisconsin football is a little touchy subject right now it's it's not i'm not happy with what's going on there running the air raid for two years what are we doing here
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: The Inconclusive Legacy Game (feat. Nate Tice)
Let's do it. Let's do it.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: The Inconclusive Legacy Game (feat. Nate Tice)
Andrew Luck, easily.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: The Inconclusive Legacy Game (feat. Nate Tice)
Oh, that's hard. Marvin Harrison Sr. Actually, not have to lie, Julio Jones. Julio Jones, but that was maybe a little before me.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: The Inconclusive Legacy Game (feat. Nate Tice)
Not named. Oh, I would say Abdul Carter would probably be the one.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: The Inconclusive Legacy Game (feat. Nate Tice)
So Tice's I agree and Naughty's I do not agree.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: The Inconclusive Legacy Game (feat. Nate Tice)
Don't complicate this game. Naughty. All right.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: The Inconclusive Legacy Game (feat. Nate Tice)
Not before the draft. I think that's going to be a little bit after that. You want me to expand on that running back one? Yeah, there might be three running backs that go in the first round.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: The Inconclusive Legacy Game (feat. Nate Tice)
Naughty. Absolutely naughty. No, no, Trevor Lawrence is legit.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: The Inconclusive Legacy Game (feat. Nate Tice)
Why are you guys complicating such a simple game? I'm positive he's good. I'm very positive he's good. A lot of people watching Jacksonville at 1 p.m. Are we all watching Jacksonville Jaguars tape?
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: The Inconclusive Legacy Game (feat. Nate Tice)
Tice. I think they just go over the edge. I'm actually buying the Bears hype this year.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: The Inconclusive Legacy Game (feat. Nate Tice)
Naughty. I actually, one of my bold takes is only one will go in the first round.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: The Inconclusive Legacy Game (feat. Nate Tice)
Oh, Tice. He got real bad. Well, Tennessee might be happy with it. I think he got bad advice trying to up the number and everything. I think he should have just taken his soup and been happy with it, to be honest, based on his play. Is that an expression? So I do think he got bad advice.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: The Inconclusive Legacy Game (feat. Nate Tice)
That was a roundabout metaphor.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: The Inconclusive Legacy Game (feat. Nate Tice)
In my head, I pictured, can I have some more, sir? You know, like that came to my head mid-sentence.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: The Inconclusive Legacy Game (feat. Nate Tice)
Do you know what that's from, Chris?
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: The Inconclusive Legacy Game (feat. Nate Tice)
Tice, I think he goes in second. The Saints do like him though.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: The Inconclusive Legacy Game (feat. Nate Tice)
The Naughty side is that he is going the first round. He just wanted to be with his family and just hang out. The Tice side is that actually he's going on day two, which is where he should be going. I think that's my perspective on it.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: The Inconclusive Legacy Game (feat. Nate Tice)
Naughty side is that, no, have you watched him throw? Oh, my God, that's day three. The tight side is, oh, my God, yes, he's a surprising guy that might go on day two, maybe even top 90, because he's a good athlete, he's tough, and he actually has a little bit more arm talent than people give him credit for. But, yes, that is our guy, Jess, me, you, and Michael Jr. Yes!
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: The Inconclusive Legacy Game (feat. Nate Tice)
Naughty. I'm not even going with the Tice side there.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: The Inconclusive Legacy Game (feat. Nate Tice)
Tice. They are lagoons.
