That I could tell the face was expressionless.
I closed my eyes.
Thinking maybe I don't need darkness, maybe as long as I can't see it, it doesn't exist.
But the stinging burn continued to crawl up my leg, and I felt its cavernous eyes on me.
Still as I felt it nearing me, I squeezed my eyes shut, too afraid to watch what would happen next.
Then the inside of my eyelids turned from red to black.
The touch of the creature vanished, leaving a dull, throbbing burn.
I opened my eyes and found more blackness.
The motion sensing light had turned off.
Took me several moments to realize that I wasn't dying.
I ran my hands over myself and was surprised to find my body intact.
I brushed carefully over the wound on my leg, and it ached sharply.
Moving slowly so as to remain undetected by the light sensors, I slipped my phone out of my pocket and brought it to my face.
The screen blasted me with light.
And I covered most of the display with one hand while the other swiped down and lowered the brightness.
Dread came over me as I lay still.
Expecting to feel the creature's touch at any moment.
I held the phone above my head as I turned slowly, peeking out of the corner of my eye until I could see the pavement beneath me.
There was the faintest of shadows.
A round chin.
