My mind scrambled through ideas of what to do next.
Throughout it all, I felt the heavy weight of grief on my organs.
I lingered on the notion of drifting to sleep on the grimy pavement until sunrise.
Allowing the incubus to swallow me in my sleep.
Finally.
I found the resolve to move.
A deep inhale.
The controlled exhale.
As I leapt to my feet and ran for the mouth of the alley.
A light flashed on after I took my first step and felt the thing chasing me once more.
This time I ran with my eyes straight ahead, only looking at the ground in my periphery.
I reached the house, leapt under the porch and slipped inside, closing the door behind me.
I grabbed the tall lamp in the corner of the living room and ran with it, yanking its cord from the outlet.
I stopped at the kitchen door and turned off the light.
As I turned to head for the hallway, I found the thing crawling over the hardwood like a spider.
I darted around it.
It swung out an arm and barely missed me.
Dropping the lamp with a crash, I swiped at the switch in the hallway and then ran to the bedroom door, reaching inside and flipping the switch.
The house was almost entirely dark, but not quite.
The orange glow of the street lights filled the window in the bedroom.
