why that's about to get even worse is if the government's new budget laws go through you now have a new capital gain system kicking in from july 27 onwards and so what that means is that if if we own parcels today which most of us do and then we sell some and say 2028

Currently, the rules suggest that you calculate the capital gain up until July 27 using the old system with the CGT discount, and then you use the new system from July onwards up until the sale.

So if you haven't been adjusting the cost basis, you've got this 10 years worth of data, you go to sell in the new system.

Not only do you have to find all those records and update all those values, you now have to then apply this new indexation system on top of that.

And we still don't actually know how the new laws are going to affect ETF tax.

So with all those adjustments now with indexation thrown in,

It's like, will it be applied on the original value?

Do you sum them all together and then apply it?

Or do you apply it proportionately between each cost-based adjustment?

That's the fun stuff the ATO is going to have to figure out.

So I'd love to see those conversations at the moment.

But yeah, if you're an ETF investor in Australia, this impacts you.

There's no like, oh, maybe my ETF is different.

Every single ETF investor is impacted by this.

And so if you're not doing it, you're simply doing your taxes wrong at this point.

So it's your records at this point.

They've always been extremely valuable to you.

Like if you ever get audited, it's your responsibility to prove how you've calculated everything.

But now it's just even more important than ever because if the laws go through,

post July 27, it'll be next to impossible to figure out your actual capital gain when you sell something if you haven't been tracking the parcels all this time.
