But it all got very complicated because everybody was betraying everybody else to everybody else.

And of course, if you read the codes, then the people killing most of the people, most of the Germans, were the partisans.
But of course, nobody could say that at the time.
And this was part of the problem, because it all had to be hushed up, because you couldn't reveal how you knew what you knew.
There was a chat that Churchill had with Maclean.
He said, do you intend to live in Yugoslavia after World War I?
And Maclean said, no.
So he was in touch with Churchill, of course, you know, SOE and McLean and all those, but he was also directly in touch with Stalin.
So he was playing both sides against the middle.
He's a genuine communist.
hoping to spread world communism, you know, that was the idea.
So he was in hand in glove with us and Stalin at the same time.
But it was a very shaky enterprise because it was an artificial creation and it was the kingdom of the Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes, which left out all the Albanians, Macedonians, and various other people.
And it wasn't a country that had naturally ever been there.
The Allies thought all this was wonderful, but actually not, because they put together peoples who weren't used to each other and had very different experiences.
Because if you were correct, you were suppressed, but you weren't suppressed in the same way as you were suppressed if you were a Serb under the Ottomans.

And that's when he actually sort of learned his communism.
You know, he actually learned all the botcrinal twiddly bits he was supposed to know about and believe in as a good communist.
