We had shootings, killings, almost on a weekly basis.
It was a bloodbath.
It was horrific.
It destroyed communities which are still trying to recover.
It left a legacy in Ireland to this day of almost a place that was war-torn, almost, just ripped apart, almost lawless.
People, I would have travelled around at the time, people saying to me, what's going on in Ireland?
They just had this impression that it was almost as bad or worse than the Troubles, the worst days of the Troubles.
People would say to me, is it safe to go to Ireland?
This is the reputation or the tarnished legacy that has been left behind.
I think it was best summed up when, at the end of Sean McGovern's trial, in a victim impact statement outside the court, family of one of his innocent victims, Noel Kerwin, after McGovern's assent, he's gone to prison for 24 years, another life ruined, and his family's life.
And they just summed it up so well, I think, when they asked a simple question, was it really worth it, Sean?
Was it really worth it?
Was any of this really worth it?
And the only people that can answer that question are people like Daniel Kennan.
