But, you know, we're celebrating the 250th this year, and I know we're going to have a lot of fireworks and it's going to be a lot of fun.
But it just struck me and my wonderful co-author, Janie Nitze, that perhaps we should take a moment to reflect on the Declaration itself, as you say, the most important document in American history, what's really in it.
and the courage and the sacrifice of the people behind it.
And I think there's a lot that the pages of history hold for us if we're willing to open them and learn from them.
And there are three big ideas in the Declaration.
One, that each and every one of us is equal.
Two, that all of us have inalienable rights given to us by God, not by government.
And three, that the people have the right and the capacity to rule themselves wisely.
And those were incredibly radical ideas at the time.
Yes, political theorists have talked about them.
Yes, England was struggling toward them.
But those were really ideas that were completely at odds with the social and political order of Europe and the world.
And every democracy that had come before it failed.
And yet here were these brave men, women, and children who were willing to give it a go.
And those individuals are incredible individuals, some of whom we know, right?
The amazing stories of Jefferson and Adams, though they disagreed on so much, came together during the Declaration and worked together.
And then people you don't know like Cesar Rodney with cancer riding through the middle of the night to break a tie.
You got to remember this is a close run thing.
There was nothing inevitable about the Declaration.
You had to break a tie by riding through the night in a thunderstorm.
