What are my strengths?
What are my triggers, to use the current vernacular?
And start from there.
And the reason for that is I think, number one, they'll be more successful and they'll be happier.
But also, and I think this connects in a strange way to the work that Don and I do, I want them to be prepared to be successful in any leadership framework because they may have multiple organizations in their lives and each of them is going to have a slightly different model.
And also, probably more importantly, is...
You know, when I was a PhD student, what's happening in computer science and AI today was an original sin, right?
Data mining was the worst possible thing that you could do.
And we were yelled at to never do it.
And of course, now that's the core technology that's driving much of our economy.
And so I want to produce leaders
that have the kind of meta skills that whatever skill set that they need to accumulate five years from now that I can't predict, they are able to understand what I need to know, to be humble enough to learn it, to practice, to take feedback from their environment so they can still be successful.
So I think we try to focus much more on those meta skills rather than a specific conception of leadership.
you know, that maybe our peers have just because we know that we're not going to be right and they need to have that dynamism in order to adapt to whatever their careers might bring them, which is going to be very hard to predict right now, I think.
I think there's a big part of that.
We focus on the work system because that connects to Don's and my work.
But I also think it starts with a really solid foundation of self-knowledge.
I often joke that we have two kinds of problem children in our programs.
We have students that talk too much and students that talk too little.
For the students who talk too much, a lot of our work is, hey, why is it that you feel like you have to have the last word in every meeting?
