The biggest challenge is to convince the American people that this is the best path forward and that they have to turn out and vote in 26 and then turn out again and vote in 28. In the end, and it's a great thing about Americans, As Abraham Lincoln said, with popular sentiment, nothing can fail. Without popular sentiment, nothing can succeed.

We have to both do the right thing and convince the American people that it's the right thing. If we do that, we will have replaced Franklin Roosevelt and Trump will be one of the greatest presidents in American history.

Well, first of all, it's very unfair. President Trump picks brilliant people. They know what they're doing. They do their homework. They actually have achieved real things. And they're up against a group of people who are lazy, out of touch with reality, don't do their homework, and set themselves up to look like fools. I think it's a very unfair fight.

And I think that at some point, those Democrats who are left who are serious are going to say to their colleagues, you know, if you can't do your homework, don't do the hearing. Don't put this.

Well, I mean, I think there are two different parts to that. One is, you said it just right, the strange and bizarre fact that of all the people who might have ended up in there, one of the most anti-Trump journalists from an anti-Trump magazine happened to be the guy there. I think that's so weird, you wouldn't have put it into a novel. The other fact is...

They probably shouldn't have those kind of discussions on Signal. When I was speaker, we routinely used the most powerful security systems. We had somebody who would come to me wherever I was carrying a secure phone so I could talk to the president on a line that the Chinese and the Russians couldn't possibly hack.

So at one level, I would say there's an underlying lesson here that's important, and that is that they need to tighten up their own security provisions just in general, not because of the Atlantic Monthly, but because of the Chinese and the Russians and the North Koreans, all of whom are very good at hacking into things. The other is my advice to them is get on, just get it over with.

This is not an issue that helps Donald Trump at all to sit around and wallow in it. A mistake was made. We don't fully know why the mistake was made. The best thing they can say is we're looking into it. And when we understand it, we'll report to you. But until then, we have nothing more to say. And just move on.
