So one way of thinking about this is that I'm actually a little bit skeptical of the idea that

you can just judge something by itself without doing so in doing anything else.

So what I mean is I'm sort of skeptical of the idea that you can just like be sitting around and just judge to yourself

There are trucks in the street.

And even if you can do that kind of thing, I think it's much more revealing of the nature of judgment to think of the kind of role that it plays in these larger acts like inferring or perceiving.

So judgments will be the things that you do as a result of perceiving.

When you come to know or believe something on the basis of perception, so if I look out in the street and I see a truck.

And I come to believe that there's a truck in the street.

Then

on my view, in coming to believe that I judged that there was a truck in the street.

And this is true even if I didn't sort of have the sentence, there is a truck in the street go through my head, or anything like that.

So on my view there's nothing in particular that it's like to judge.

You don't have to have any particular kind of experience in performing the judgment.

So although there may be something to the analogy between judging and asserting

I don't actually think that that's the most revealing way of bringing out what judging is.

I think judging is

part of these larger mental acts, sort of most fundamentally.

Yeah, that's right.

Although you do have to be kind of careful here, I think, in how you're thinking about the parts.

Not only because I want to avoid this sort of view on which you have to be kind of rehearsing the sentences in your mind as part of judging.
