Perhaps thought this team wasn't really his anymore.

But I wonder if there'd have been a new test coach in place in the new year after the Ashes.

That would have given Ben plenty of time to get to know and build a working relationship with that head coach.

And he would have kept going.

I mean, he's still worth his place in the team as a player.

Now, the captaincy, you never really know, do you, until he actually starts to take the field again and making decisions and...

Perhaps, you know, perhaps he was a bit worn down by all of that.

But I don't think he would have retired.

And like I say, I don't think the Rex rooms, the nightclub incident would have happened.

Well, amazingly solidified.

I mean, Richard Gould said today or yesterday, the chief exec of the ECB, that Rob's going to be around for the long term and that they value his cricket knowledge and put him in charge of finding a new coach.

He's very lucky.

He's very lucky to have such understanding employers to keep his job after that.

the events of the last mistakes um as the last six to eight months you know he's gone through a couple of coaches now he had Matthew Mott for a little while and got rid of him and then uh unified the job with Brendan McCollum and that was probably the start of the decline uh now I mean I'm not so sure how much you know he can take some of the blame for the lack of preparation in Australia um but I think most of that fell in the lap of the coach but again he was the boss he could have

You know, he could have insisted on more.

So, yeah, it's surprising that he survived.

And I think, again, there's a little bit of softness at the ECB.

They don't want to make these big decisions.

They don't want to get rid of people.

And that's good.
