It was not a great game, particularly in the first half.
And they did their best to kind of not...
the result they needed by missing some massive chances at the end but um you know that they that they got the point that they uh they eventually needed and there was this kind of strange moment for about a minute after the uh full-time whistle where they got the point but it was unclear whether the point was enough and then there was the classic situation everyone grabbing around the phone and then they uh they all exploded in joy how was the atmosphere there nick
The atmosphere was amazing.
I mean, it was just kind of walking around the stadium before the game, it was amazing how many like locals or Americans have sort of adopted Cape Verde as a sort of second team.
I was speaking to one guy who said he basically bought, he wanted to go to a World Cup game and he bought tickets for here because they were cheap.
And then kind of gradually, you know, throughout the group stage, the first two games,
fallen in love um with with the team and particularly with Virginia who um the the the game here the other day there's this kind of when Portugal played um whatever Cristiano Ronaldo did anything at all he would get kind of huge cheers from the crowd whenever he touched the ball and whenever he was up on the big screen and for this game it that a very similar uh treatment was given to Virginia which was just you know
Incredible, given that two weeks ago, no one had really heard of this guy.
Yeah, I mean, incredible.
The population of the islands is about 560,000 people.
It's 10 kind of pretty small islands and all of them are inhabited.
I can't forget this, only eight or nine of them are actually inhabited.
So just a stunning achievement.
They're the third smallest nation by population size ever to qualify for the World Cup.
They're now the smallest by quite a distance, I think, to get through to the knockout phases.
So, yeah, it can't really be kind of...
overstated how much of an undug story this is.
You could kind of maybe argue they've got a bit lucky because they're the first team I think since 1998 to get through with only three points so they've kind of relied on other teams not being quite so good this time but still an absolutely extraordinary achievement.
