During her visit to an ICE detention facility in the city of Iloy, Democratic Congresswoman Adelita Grijalva says she met a 79-year-old Cuban woman who is developing dementia while her family appeals the denial of her asylum case.

Grijalva says a medical officer at the facility said there has recently been a notable increase in detainees over 65 years of age.

According to the American Immigration Council, the number of people released by ICE for humanitarian reasons while their immigration cases play out has plummeted under the Trump administration.
