Um, the democratic party was very, very, very, very powerful.
And the, was it the governor or no, it was the mayor, mayor of Atlanta, not Atlanta.
Um, uh,
Memphis, the mayor of Memphis basically ran in Tennessee everywhere.
He determined all the city councils, all the mayors, all the everything.
So like whatever they wanted went.
And while all the boys were away fighting World War Two, they would basically install sheriffs.
And the sheriffs at this point in time were basically extorting the local population for money.
Like they were pulling people over and it was like pay up and they were keeping the money and they were just abusing the shit out of this local town
Yeah, like completely rigging elections.
Well, all the World War II vets get back in, get back home, and a couple of different things happened.
Basically, what would happen was when the vets first started showing back up, these corrupt sheriff's deputies knew that these guys had money from coming back home from the war, so they would basically...
sit outside bars and wait for them to come out and then charge them with public intox and give them huge fines and keep all the money.
And this devolved into two of these deputies confronting, uh, I believe he was in the Navy and they wound up shooting and killing him.
And this pissed off all the rest of the vets came back into town.
So they started their own political party to run for mayor or city council.
Early, when they weren't supposed to, because so many people showed up.
So the veterans, it was literally a veteran's ticket was running, and they were basically running on the platform of like, hey,
It's going to be a fair election.
We're going to have veterans there poll watching at every location with the deputies and we're going to make sure it's fair.
