So I'm going to tell you a little bit about the book.
It opens with this quite unforgettable scene.
It's set in 1978, and there's this 10-year-old Louisa.
She's walking on a beach in Japan with her father, who's called Cirque Kang, and he's this kind of awkward, gifted guy.
He's very protective of her, and he can't swim.
That's emphasised.
He's carrying a flashlight, as in the name of the book, in one hand and holding her hand in the other hand,
And then very quickly, the next chapter jumps to the following morning.
Louisa is found unconscious on a beach and he's disappeared and everyone assumes he's drowned.
And that's the sort of premise.
And then it goes back to detail his life in Japan.
He's a Korean emigre in Japan.
And his wife, Louisa's mum, Anne, who's an American woman who has another child when she's very young, Louisa's brother, Toby, who's this quite mad kind of guru hippie guy, which is he's a brilliant character.
And then she gets together with Cirque and they go to Japan.
