But unfortunately, that includes legitimate texts too from your cell carrier, for example, or FedEx.
So if you're going that route, then add those numbers to your contacts as well so you don't miss anything.
Most carriers, the major ones, Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, allow you to forward the contents of that text message to 7726, which helps them improve their text algorithms.
But it's also important to file a consumer complaint with the FCC and FTC, which are two commissions, the Federal Communications Commission and the Federal Trade Commission, that regulate these sorts of issues to signal to them that it's a widespread problem.
That initiative you were just referring to is called Stir Shaken, and it's a protocol that was enacted sometime last year.
And it was so effective at combating robocalls that it's, in fact, why there are so many robotechs this year.
A lot of those robocallers moved to robotechs because they couldn't call us anymore.
And also, I think that a lot of Americans have lost their faith in genuine calls, and so they're not picking up their phone as much as they used to.
And the commission is considering a similar type of protocol or technology that would apply also to texts, but it has not passed yet.
There are apps that go beyond your phone's ability to detect spam with larger databases of scammers and advanced algorithms that help them identify things like keywords and suspicious links.
A popular one is called RoboKiller that says it eliminates 99% of spam.
And another is Nomo Robo, which gives you the option to either fully block spam or just identify it so that you can block it yourself.
Both have a monthly fee, but it's important to note that you have to grant access to your texts to allow these apps to work.
And that includes things like verification codes that you may get from your bank, though the companies say that the texts are anonymized before they're sent to their servers, and so they cannot see who the recipient of those texts are.
Yeah, I think that until there are algorithms that can very intelligently detect which texts are coming from a legitimate company or a human and which texts are spammers, and until there's a protocol of protection at the federal level, the onus is on the consumer to be vigilant about interacting with texts they receive.
And I think that a good rule in general is to take a breath and think about and assess whether or not this text might be legitimate before you take any action, whether it's to click on a link or to respond to it.
