I noticed the soles when you were sitting opposite me there.

For a moment I thought you must have got them wet and dried them a little too vigorously.
But near the instep there's a little wafer of paper with the shopman's hieroglyphics on it.
What damp would have had that off?
Obviously you've been sitting with your feet stretched out to the fire.
And a man would hardly sit so long in front of a fire in June if he were in his full health.
