And you just go through and yeah, you might fall by the wayside, not pass your exams.
People can understand that.
And then you become the specialist.
What people don't realise is that you could be in hospital for surgery and there are two junior doctors, two registrars looking after you.
One of them could be on a training scheme, heading for becoming a consultant surgeon, assuming they pass their exams.
And the other is in a position that will never lead there, although they hope they're going to get there because that position is not accredited by the College of Surgeons for training.
So they're doing the same work as the other registrar.
The same hours, the same surgeries, yes.
And you've just mentioned registrars there, both unaccredited and accredited.
And once you're fully qualified, you're out at the other end, you've passed all your exams, you get a certificate from the Royal Australian College of Surgeons, that's when you become a consultant within the public system.
So you take on all the responsibilities and you have the team below you, the registrars sit within the team and you're at the head of it.
But these unaccredited registrars are sitting there hoping to get on the training scheme.
They're on this pathway that actually can lead to nowhere, a dead end.
And it's the people leading to that dead end that this story is about, from reporter Rachel Bongiorno.

Now really the only college which is relevant to is the College of Surgeons.
They're all Australasian College of Surgeons.
The other colleges, like physicians and so on, do not have this gap between accredited and unaccredited positions.
So we really need a response from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.
