And they basically helped Erdoğan's emergence and his image, especially in early 2000s, because that was also a period that Turkey tried to... It was a period of Turkish accession into the European Union.
So everything was going well.
Erdoğan accepted the end of Turkish control over Cyprus.
And many other issues were about to resolve up until, of course, the Arab, let's say, Arab Spring.
I said Obama even celebrated Erdogan's and his modest, his pious Islamic tolerance, his policies.
The first country Obama visited just after his election was Turkey.
He made a speech in parliament in Ankara.
I was just a child.
I was amazed to see an American president on television in our capital.
I remember that day.
And he preached about Erdogan's policies and showed Turkey as a model for other countries in the Islamic world.
And then, of course,
with Arab Spring, the following migrant crisis in the region, in Europe and other continents, we see this rising Islamophobia as a new trend in politics, as a new way to maybe reduce the public dissent in the West, because people were seeing the effects of neoliberal disorder everywhere.
people were becoming unemployed, there was huge mistrust between public, between population and governments all over Europe, United States and Eastern Europe.
Then we were seeing that this Islamophobia
was presented as a remedy or as the scapegoat of all the problems that were erupting in all our countries and in late 2010s we know that Erdoğan's and Turkish relations with Europe and United States were
not so good as today.
We didn't have any US president in the last 11 years.
And especially under Obama and Biden, relations were really strained between Ankara and Washington.
