I am, although I have I have a couple of takes on on the carbon tax, but he is correct that I think in his analysis of what the government is doing, which is basically
uh uh w who knows whether they're panicking, but like being very averse to the idea of raising any tax on fuel at the moment, no matter how small it is, I want to come back to that, uh, because of where they feel the public mood is.
No matter how sensible or not the actual um
uh tax would be.
So for example, even the excise duty, you know, the ESRI pointed out that you know 50% of the benefit of of reducing excise was going to the top 40% of earners.
And I think it was Alan Barrett from me as where I said if we were doing that with the Apple tax, if we were saying we were going to give half the Apple tax money to the top 40% of earners, there'd be uproar.
But that's exactly what we were doing with with the 100 million euro a month we're spending of taxpayers' money
we're spending and reducing excise, a half of it is going to the top forty percent.
So
But but there was a feeling by government that they had to respond.
The fuel protests and so that it hasn't been very strategic.
I I agree with them on that.
And obviously the next budget, the next point of decision point is the is the budget, having done the delay again on Friday in the Doyle.
Um and you would hope, after all this time, and this is the second fossil fuel price crisis in four years after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, you'd hope they'd have more of a strategy by now.
Uh but they don't seem to.
And I will but I will say this is that the uh the the at this stage there there is a risk that in this debate two things are lost.
One is basically how small the carbon tax is in terms of the prices, what the its effect on prices, but also how small it is in terms of our overall need of action to reduce emissions.
It's not the be-all and the end-all.
And there's a risk that the government and the opposition kind of focus only on the carbon tax when there's when there's bigger fish.
