We could put direction on it.
We couldn't put numbers on it.
But I think the important fact here is that prior to the war, we were starting to see genuine signs of growth in the economy.
The momentum was picking up.
The very, very easy monetary conditions that we had were starting to do their work.
And then we got hit by the war, and now it's basically reversed.
So we're still back in a position where there's momentum in the economy, and most of the leading indicators that we're looking at now are headed in the right direction.
And the last thing a central bank wants to be doing in this environment is adding to the inflationary pressures.
So all we're talking about here has been taking the foot off
the accelerator.
We're not talking about them generating monetary conditions which would genuinely slow the economy.

Overall, are we winning or not?
We're both.
I mean, on some measures, we're improving dramatically.
On other measures, we're still lagging the world behind.
If you look at road deaths, you mentioned we had more than 800 fatalities on our roads in the 1970s.
That's down to under 300.
Still too many, I think.
But it's a success story, nevertheless, because we've got way more traffic and way more people.
