This goes back to our days of evolution.

We're motivated to keep things sort of as light as possible.

So when our processing is disrupted by something like complex language, we look for a reason why that happened.

And we're really sensitive to the feelings that that disruption brings up in us, those feelings of bad or I don't like this.

But we're super, super uncalibrated when it comes to identifying the source.

So what you see happening is that people will look, they might consider blaming themselves like, oh, you know, I've never been good at math.

They might blame a message sender.

My math teacher really sucked this semester.

Or they might blame the context around them.

I did bad on this test because the room was too cold.

So we're always looking for somebody to blame.

And what I wanted to see in this study is, is it possible that when we're told who to blame in a legal context to the defendant, is it possible that we are more likely to ascribe blame to them?

Are we misattributing this negative feeling of our processing being disrupted to the person in front of us who we're told has done bad things?

And I think that's actually what happened here.

Right.

So what happened was people were more likely to say that they would vote guilty, but they were also less confident in their decision.

So again, to your point that that's kind of counterintuitive, people have this bad feeling.

They attributed that bad feeling to the person in front of them.

And then they felt bad about it afterwards.

They didn't feel like they'd made a decision they were confident in.
