He wanted to think his way into roles.
And I think you see that in his performances.
So Fellini, for a start, didn't want him to play Casanova.
He wanted Marcello Mastroianni, his muse, a person, an actor of infinite plasticity who is just totally fluid, totally open, has no, not has no ego, but like will allow himself to be put into any position.
And Sutherland wouldn't do that, couldn't do that.
So the way, it's awful, the way Fellini approaches him is like, well, he's just a puppet.
He shaved his head so his hairline moves back.
So he's got this enormous forehead.
He basically spent three hours in makeup every day.
His eyes are pinned back so he can't move his eyes.
His teeth were filed down.
So there's sort of this process of humiliation of his body.
And then he comes on set and Fellini just laughs at him.
He mocks him.
Maybe because he's cruel and abusive, but when you watch the film, it gives this quality of kind of uncertainty, because you can feel this actor all the time being like, am I doing it right?
Are you going to yell?
And it really, it pays off in a weird way.
And he's the outsider as well because everybody else is Italian on set.
Everybody else is kind of gossiping and participating in Italian.
He doesn't speak Italian very well.
