I've always thought this about Lauren's writing, but I think in this book more than ever, there's this...

constant sense that you're moving through these very extreme states of consciousness but you're in very very closely described physical spaces and charlie's basically kind of meandering through a labyrinth she starts in london she's in the groucho then she finds herself in berlin and she sort of moves through these physical spaces a lot of them subterranean

And I was fascinated by that.

I was fascinated by how you used place to make psychic space, that her sense of sort of fragmentation finds a kind of equivalence in these dark rooms or these clubs with like a swimming pool full of balls of water that she's dabbling her little hand in.

Yeah, I think... Apartments being broken into, apartments being sort of assaulted in different ways, cats moving in and out of apartments.

This sort of sense of physical space is like the story's kind of happening on that level as well.

So talk about place, what it means in your workings.

I'm probably going to ask one more question and then open it up to everybody.

But this book is in a shared universe with At Certain Points We Touch.

So there are characters that move through both.

And I had read Lauren's book.

are we going to call it third novel?

Third novel, third novel.

As soon as it had finished just before I read this for a second time.

So on my second reading, I then realised that there are characters from the third novel who make little cameos.
