My eleventh birthday passed, and Soot, against all odds, continued to live on,
I remembered the pet store owner saying he would live as long as he wasn't harmed.
It was odd.
Soot didn't become a decrepit blob that looked like bubble gum that had rolled around a barber's floor like most elderly hamsters.
Instead, he was as youthful, healthy, and vibrant as ever.
I thought for sure that my mother had found Soot dead and replaced him before I came home from school someday.

Hamsters only lived around two years, not four.
I didn't want to complain too much, so it had been a constant comfort, and I wasn't sure if I could sleep without the sound of his spinning wheel and his presence in my dreams.
My mother, being the sole income in our home now, worked a lot of late shifts, and I had several hours, if not my entire evening, to myself.
