don't try and guess the markets because no bell rings at the bottom to say this is the bottom of the market now is the time to go in and you're more likely to mix the good days investing is boring it's simple it's straightforward put it in now take it out in years from now and you'll be okay and everything else is just noise

So this is a classic question and this is like, you couldn't have teed this up better for a financial planner sitting in the room, right?
voice-verified
So this is a classic question that we get all the time.

So if you think about when I'm building out a financial plan for a private client, what happens with it is, the first thing I establish is if the status quo remains, what is your date of financial independence?
voice-verified
So at what point or what age will you be in your life that you created enough wealth that you never have to work again and you never have to worry about money?
voice-verified
And let's just imagine for someone that age is 62 years of age.
voice-verified
And now we control the different tests at them.
voice-verified
We can say, OK, so if you renovate the house or you upsize and you do it with a mortgage, that 62 years of age now becomes 64 years of age because you took the mortgage.
voice-verified
Or if you save for five years and assuming house prices don't go away on you or the cost of renovating doesn't go away on you and taking all those things into account as best we can, if you do it the saving way, it might be 61 years of age, so you'll be able to retire a year earlier.
voice-verified
Now, I'm totally making up that 62, 61 and 64, right?
voice-verified
But the whole point of a good financial plan is to take all of the details into account and then test it and say, OK, what if I do this and what if I do that?
voice-verified
And by using the anchor of the financial independence, we can determine, well, actually, you know what?
voice-verified
Yeah, if you move house and that's really what you want to do, you're going to have to work for an extra two years in that made up example.
voice-verified
Is that worth it to you?
voice-verified
Because you might be 52 years of age now going, yeah, yeah, I don't mind working until I'm 64.
voice-verified
But if I ask 61 year old, do you want to retire next year or three years time?
voice-verified
It might be a very different question.
voice-verified
So what you get to do when you work out those maths is you get to avoid waking up in 10 years time wondering, I wonder could I have done that differently and could I be out by now?
voice-verified
So what I would say is, is that there's no hard and fast answer to that specific question without going into all of the details.
voice-verified
But there is a way of calculating what the right thing to do financially is.
