We are seeing them everywhere.
And even before that, I think the most important break in Turkish history, the biggest turning point was in 1980 with the military coup.
that took place in September 12, which turned Turkey into a fully-fledged neoliberal state, a national religious conservative neoliberal state.
After 1980, most of the political elites
were coming from those circles.
So we are seeing the significance and importance of that heritage, that anti-communist, anti-socialist, anti-Soviet youth movements and student organizations, how they impacted the current, the contemporary political scene in Turkey.
Before 1980, of course, Turkish politics had many problems.
Going back to 1950, when Turkey just passed into this multi-party political system, which facilitated, of course, Turkish accession to NATO in 1952.
There were many problems, many issues going on with Turkish politics, such as from the civil rights to labor issues.
We're talking about the height of Cold War, but 1980 was a real break point until then.
We can qualify, we can talk about a Turkish state that was nationalist developmentalist, that had nationalist developmentalist policies, which we can also reframe as Kemalism.
of course, which is at the heart of the liberal critique of Turkey, the scapegoat of Turkish history.
Whenever the liberal historians or liberal politicians want to blame something in Turkey, in current social atmosphere, they just blame Kemalism.
But Kemalizm actually reigned up until, let's say, 1980.
After that, we are seeing a neoliberal, religious conservative standard, style of governing, style of rule in Turkey.
The military coup, the military regime lasted for two years, then the general who led the military junta became the president and then in 80s we started seeing the first neoliberal, in the implementation of first neoliberal policies such as privatizations and full accession of turkeys to custom union with Europe,
And then we're seeing the end of all these developmentalist policies, incursion of US and Western capital into the Turkish market, which was protected until 1980, banning of all left-wing civil organizations and trade unions,
