You know, there's some theories of translation that say you try to communicate the energy and so you can perhaps use a different metaphor than what's in the original, and others would say, you know, you should try as far as possible to give as close to the original meaning as you're able, um, in a translated language.
How do you bring yourself to the project of translation?
can see.
Yeah.
Yeah.
What are some ways where you feel like some of um Rumi's poetry feels contemporary to today?
Are there particular poems where you think, oh, this is speaking to something that's very live at the moment?
Mm.
He um I mean it's hard as you recite that to not see the images of Gaza going through our our minds to see what's on the news and the the powerlessness as well as the calls to solidarity that are so important at Greenbelt and that I've heard you be so clear about as well in some of your recitations.
Why did you choose the term water for the the second translation?
This is the last question I have for you.
I I feel like when you talk about Rumi, you bring us uh into something like that turning dance, turning toward the heart where there's extraordinary energy.
I know everybody can feel the energy that you bring to this Halle, but there's also there is a stillness, there's a clarity and uh a strange anarchy in that stillness too, of of a void, of of something that can't be grasped in language.
So um thank you for the phenomenon that you bring to us.
Uh
In in all that you've done here.
I know that I am just one of all the people who are listening to this live now and also who my who will listen to this on the recording of Poetry and Bound when we release it later on in the year.
Um, who's filled with gratitude for the dedication, the scholarship, the love that you um bring to this.
Your translations are Water, which is new released this year, twenty twenty five, by New York Review Books, and Gold, which was released a few years back.
Um
