Now, of course, the other part of this that's really interesting is how was this in some key way messed up on ESPN's part?

And the framing of the story, as well as the specific paragraphs in the story, it's not just a matter of like, we were right, but the framing was bad.

It's there were many things like no evidence of funneling money through Clippers sponsors that by any reasonable measure was wrong.

And so my reporting says that the Clippers fed

ESPN, a version of their legal defense, and sold it as the facts that the NBA obtained.

And in that very distinction, right, this is a legal defense premised on a certain set of facts, you can find the disagreement that might make you want to defend yourself.

They were fighting.

And it was fighting about whether Ballmer would even want to negotiate a settlement.

And it was fighting about all of it.

And so, yes, this is a rare thing.

It's a rare thing that I said at the time for Mike Bass, the chief comms guy, to put his name on a statement that is that bold.
