Yeah, well, it would have been extraordinary today.
I mean, in terms of teams coming up, yeah, there were others that later did that, Nottingham Forest being the obvious example, you know, going all the way to the title.
But Ipswich...
had done it before, but really, I don't think there was a great deal of surprise because they'd been United had been so good in the second division.
They'd really just burn through it and play playing such confident football.
There was still concern.
Um, and if you look at the team now, um, maybe nowadays it would have found it difficult to compete in height and, and, and, you know, a lot of these physical attributes.
But the football was so effervescent that they just walked into the First Division, the elite, the Premier League, as it would now be called, as if they owned it.
And it was a very, very exciting period because the Busby era, the excitement of the Busby era had been recreated under Tommy Doherty.
And the crowd figures, which we'll no doubt discuss at some stage in this episode, very much reflected that.
Right from the start, it was pretty close to the 60,000 capacity of the, just over 60,000 capacity of the Grand.
So, yeah, they were so effervescent and exciting that even though I think Gordon Hill was not signed until three months into the season, that number 11 shirt, which had
been problematic ever since Ian Story-Moore, a wonderful signing under, or Busby actually made the signing, but it was under the management of Franco Farrell, a player who would have been a United legend but for injury.
Gordon Hill at last filled that number 11 jersey, the outside left jersey, and United had balance.
It had the old Busby
um, tradition of two, two proper wingers, which he had been there right from the post-war start of the Busby era with, um, Mitten and, um, uh, the Scotsman, I've forgotten his name, uh, the outside right, uh, the, um, Delaney, Delaney and Mitten, you know, that right from the start of the Busby era, two wingers.
