Yes, it was the usual sort of slow...
you know, sort of slightly labored FA Cup final.
Southampton, as you rightly say, were full of not only experience, but class.
I mean, looking, I'm just looking at the team now, it had Mick Shannon, Peter Osgood, Jim McAuley, who had a good spell at United before then.
Jim Steele, slow, but
Physical defender, Mel Blythe, who wasn't bad.
Nick Holmes, who would run all day.
And at right back, Peter Rodrigues, the Welsh right back, a very decent right fullback too.
So it wasn't a bad side.
But United, yes, rightly still favourites.
Southampton were in the second division.

But anyway, a very good side under a very
Good manager.
But United just didn't step up.
It was the usual team.
Stepney, Forsyth, Houston, Jerry Daly, Brian Greenhoff, Martin Buchan, Steve Koppel, Sammy McIlroy, Stuart Pearson, Lou Macari and Gordon Hill.
With David McCreary, a good chance to mention him on the bench.
He made 16 league appearances on the bench during the season and 12 starts.
