I really appreciated Councilmember Caudrey's comments and I know I haven't asked a bunch of questions up here today and I'm not part of either of the sub-quorums that appear to be coalescing around this issue, but I just wanted to flag, I think this is one of those, we're all between a rock and a hard place on this one. podcast-host

I think we're trying to balance the desire to deliver a meaningful project, whether that is sooner or later, to be able to point to something later on down the line and say that we can be proud of what we've done, that we have been able to reconnect the community back together. podcast-host

I've also had some productive conversations with stakeholders that are very interested in seeing what decisions made and what the future looks like for I-35 in downtown Austin. podcast-host

And I will just reiterate, I think we're kind of looking at, hey, do we make a decision now and have something beautiful to look at in 10 years? podcast-host

Or is it an opportunity for other people to have many beautiful things to look at many decades down the road? podcast-host

In all likelihood, this highway expansion is going to last for 75 years for the life of that project once it's completed, potentially longer than that, depending on how things hold up. podcast-host

So there will be many, many generations, and perhaps by the end of it, none of us will be around to be able to appreciate it, but we know that future generations care a lot about this. podcast-host

And the hard part is if this council is not in a position to spend more money, which it doesn't seem like we want to do and anybody else wants us to do, that we're looking at having to take away opportunities for the future to be able to do something we can point to in the next 10 years. podcast-host

And so that's a very difficult decision to make. podcast-host

I do think that this council and future councils are going to be visionary and want to be visionary. podcast-host

But with limited dollars and without extra support from the state or federal government through grant opportunities, we don't know what that looks like. podcast-host

And I would hate for us to find ourselves, you know, 20 years down the road with a lot of federal grants trying to reconnect communities together and podcast-host
