And I think that's kind of what the biggest problem about this game is that Tropical Freeze exists and is cheaper. And I think that there's a ton of people, I know, there's a ton of people out there that haven't even played Tropical Freeze. And if you're choosing between the two, play Tropical Freeze. I think that's an absolute no-brainer from any perspective you look at.
Having said that, there's a great game here. I think that this game represents a... Oh, it's worth your time. It's definitely worth your time. It's not worth $60. But it is definitely worth your time. It is brutally difficult in a lot of ways, to an extent that they didn't need to go that hard.
Most of the game feels very modern compared to the original games, where it is a little easier, a little bit more about the adventure than anything. But then you get to a certain point, and some of the levels are just frustratingly difficult. And I can see a lot of people kind of giving up on the game, and just putting down, being like,
I'm not having fun anymore because of these barrel rocket levels. Very Flappy Bird inspired, which is not necessarily what you want from a game of this prestige, right? Some of the boss fights, very uneven. Some of them are very cool and interesting, but I feel like over half of them are probably like... Didn't really enjoy my time with that.
Let me get back to the platforming levels because the platforming levels are great. This comes from an era where I feel like the birth of the cinematic 2D platformer kind of started. And this game is a great example of it. Every single level has its own unique locations and vistas and platforms you're interacting with and enemy variety and just gimmicks, but in a good way.
And I really feel like the team over at Retro back then played like the Uncharted games, the original Uncharted games. They're like, okay, but what if we added that energy to a Donkey Kong game? And what I really love about Returns in particular is things like you're seeing right here of He's a giant ape. They treat him like an ape. You know, he's not just a plumber jumping around on things.
It's, like, just because there's similarities with other platformers, like, there's a bigger emphasis on, like, grabbing and climbing and swinging and things like that that I just feel like really kind of... You can see the love that Retro had after making the Metroid Prime series and just being like, all right, we took... a 2D Metroidvania, like exploration-based game.
And how do we turn that into a 3D adventure but keep the spirit of it? With this, you could really tell they're like, all right, how do we keep what made the Donkey Kong Country games so special and what they were, the essence of them? But how do we make it more modern and actually lean into what Donkey Kong can uniquely bring to gameplay? And they did a great job with it. And playing this game,
um for as many faults as i have with this version of it and the price and all that stuff the actual game design is impeccable yeah and i kept thinking like man i can't wait to see what retro does next like i metroid prime 4 like we're we're supposedly getting it this year like i supposed to the
Team over there just gets creativity and gameplay so much better than most other developers that I can't wait to see anything that they work on. But anyways, it's great to go back to one of these platformers because this is a classic at this point, and I do love it. I just think that it is a really good example of...
Sometimes when a better version comes out later, it can kind of take the place of it and feel like, all right, tropical freeze is a must play. This is a, if you'll really like tropical freeze, maybe you get this on sale and play through it later type deal.
Look, personally, Tim Geddes, I'm very happy that this game is on the Switch. I think that it is a great classic platformer. ZOBGM says, I think this is still a must play, but Tropical Freeze is just a perfect game. trust me, I have so much love for this game, but playing through it, I've been bouncing back and forth just to go like to tropical freeze.
And it's like, it's crazy how much better tropical freezes. Like, I don't even think that there's a question in terms of bosses, in terms of like, even the things this game does. Great. Tropical freeze just doesn't have much better. Uh, But yeah, I agree with you that in terms of the game preservation, it's awesome.
And I want to see because I wouldn't want this game stuck on the 3DS or even worse, the Wii with its controls and stuff. So, yeah, like that's awesome. But the pricing structure is just totally out of whack for what they're offering here. And I also think that there were some things that they could have, like,
improved even more like they add a modern mode that kind of can make things a little easier for people but the nintendo games are really good at adding a ton of options to make the games accessible to people of all ages or anything to be able to play through um and i feel like they could have even went harder with uh making this easier for some people because some of these levels are just absolutely brutal um anyway that's donkey kong country returns hd
