Thersites gets a lot of reworking and reimagination in the early modern period.
I mean, it's one of my favorite moments in the epic because, again, I sort of relate to Thersites.
And you get a sense for that in book three of the Iliad, right, where Helen is talking to Priam about all these physiques from Troy.

and troubling and problematic, as all epics are, you know, all those things at once, a Portuguese epic called The Lucians by a guy named Kim Moish.
And there is a similar epic malcontent named Adam Astor.
And one of the reasons I'm bringing this guy up is because...
He's a great index for how early modern epic is trying to register the changes in how the world is being conceived.
Camois is trying to move between those scales, and he's telling a story about a hero, but a very different kind of hero than a martial hero.
This hero is an explorer, Vasco da Gama, so he's going from Portugal all the way to India.
And at a central moment in the journey around the Cape of Good Hope, so the very tip of Africa, he encounters this sort of personification of the land.
And Adam Aster is at once totally misshapen, lumpy, deformed, ogre-ish.
