Yes, there's many responses to this, but yes, I was bothered by it for many reasons, one of which is I think we just need to be honest and upfront about what is happening here.
I don't believe the governor of Texas or the people that made this decision in Texas deeply care about Christianity.
Now, I know that seems like a harsh statement, but here's why I say that.
because if they did then they would be according to the bible welcoming the immigrant feeding the hungry caring for the sick and loving their enemies you're not seeing that at all and it's telling that governor abbott in texas vetoed funding for federal summer lunch programs for low-income children while simultaneously making bible
uh required reading in public schools that's problematic and i would pause there and say it sounds to me in many ways that the people who obviously haven't read the bible that it should probably be required for are the people who are making it required for people in schools what i mean is the governor might want to read the bible himself because if he does he would see
that actually understanding the way of Jesus would be actually feeding low-income kids in that state.
And so it's kind of on par, Don, to be honest with you.
I'm not overly shocked by it.
I grew up evangelical, and growing up evangelical, that's kind of the way that Christianity was.
It was, let's starve the kids that desperately need food, but simultaneously, let's make the Bible required reading.
So I'm not overly shocked by it when I heard it, because I just don't believe that a lot of what's happening right now in our nation is actually a deep concern for Christianity.
I don't think they care about that.
I think they care about power.
I think they care about authority.
I think they care about keeping the hierarchy in place the way it is.
And you might ask the question, so why even bother with the Bible, with God?
Because this is how you create some sense of authority.
because if you can use the bible if you can use god if you can use uh the ten commandments or whatever it is you're trying to do um your political agenda then becomes god's agenda right and what happens at that point is any opposition to it then
you are equated as an enemy of God.
You see what I'm saying?
