Looking back, the symptoms Diane described are an indicator that she was experiencing something called ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, which happens when a person responds too strongly to fertility drugs.
A healthy 29-year-old woman the age Diane was at the time typically has between 10 and 15 follicles per cycle.
Each one of those follicles contains an immature egg.
In a natural cycle, one follicle releases one egg.
But in an egg retrieval, the doctor attempts to remove each egg from each follicle, even in a mature egg, because each egg they can retrieve ups the chances that they'll be able to produce a viable embryo.

And you had seen upwards of 60 on your ultrasounds.
During her three-week stay in California, Diane had gone through follicle stimulation and egg retrieval and a multiple embryo transfer, where multiple embryos created in the fertility clinic with her eggs and her husband's sperm were transferred into her uterus.
It was a grueling and uncomfortable process, and it was extraordinarily expensive.
