Tell me a little bit about your relationship and your future plans.
Diane's husband is Budge Porter.
Budge is a third-generation Nebraska football player.
In April of 1976, Budge was 20 years old, when during a spring practice for the University of Nebraska, he made a tackle that resulted in a catastrophic spinal cord injury, one that left him paralyzed.
Budge and Diane met in 1984.
They fell in love and in 1989, they got married.
They bought a home in Nebraska and Budge made a successful career for himself as a stockbroker.
Budge and Diane knew they wanted to start a family.
So how did you then go about finding a doctor in Southern California?
What led you to Southern California for fertility treatment?
Dr. Ricardo Ash was one of three doctors leading the Center for Reproductive Health at the University of California at Irvine.
Dr. Ash's reputation preceded him.
His fertility treatments were at the forefront of this emerging technology and treatment known as IVF, in vitro fertilization.
Today, in 2026, I think most of us know what IVF is.
In the simplest terms, doctors take an egg and sperm and combine them in a lab to create an embryo.
That embryo is transferred into a uterus to try to start a pregnancy.
And back in the early 90s, Dr. Ash claimed to have a 40% success rate, which was astonishingly high.
And Diane had family in California that they could stay with during the treatment.
So she and Budge chose to see Dr. Ash for their IVF treatment.
They felt confident they were being treated by the best of the best.
