He goes from this triumphant total warrior after initial battlefield successes in the opening months of the Pacific War to then becoming a troublemaker because he's clashing with so many different elements and there's all of these conflicts.
And then what was his, I think, brilliant strategic ability is
seems to calcify and he becomes a bit rigid and inflexible.
And it's very much a case that as the war goes on, he becomes less effective and confidence in his abilities, both military and political, seem to ebb away as well.
And the islands of Saipan features in Irish World Cup history and it features in the fall of Tojo as well because when Saipan is captured, that really is the end of him and he's forced to resign.
But you have a fascinating chapter on what happens next.
and the way he acts to shield the emperor, to take responsibility and represent Japan's interests even out of power.
