I ended up being a reasonably successful player.
But for me, when I went to college, I didn't know I could be a professional.
But I got to Stanford.
I played number six on the team my first few months of the season because I had all these guys ahead of me that had also been number one recruit.
But then I was walking around the campus, and I'd meet people in my dorm, or I'd go to the swimming pool.
There were Olympic athletes there.
Olympians, gold medalists swimming on the Stanford swimming team, playing on the water polo team.
So I got like a wake-up call.
I'm just a tennis player who's a decent national tennis player.
My point is that you bring up a great point.
Our university system has been the training ground for many of our Olympic athletes over the years.
And I think we want that to continue.
And there's a competitive side of me that wants Americans to do well.
I realize that some are saying, well, your American players are soft and they just got to get better.
There's got to be some guardrails about who can get these opportunities.
And we have to take pride and continue to train our best kids and give the kids the opportunity that maybe that's still there.
If people like the parent I spoke to at our tennis academy think that's not there anymore, then I'm worried about what the future of these other sports other than the big two looks like for the American youth.
I think that's part of the reason why I put this trying to get the conversation out there, that I think we need to have this conversation with people like you and people in the mainstream to start to understand.
Because if we just want it to be like professionalized.
as it is in football and basketball, and everybody loves to see their team win.
