A voice is heard in Ramah, weeping in great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted because they are no more.

So if we look at this passage, we're going to see two different forms of prophecy and fulfillment.

In the first instance, Matthew gives us a passage from the prophet Hosea.

And this is what Hosea wrote.

He said, And he says that Jesus, in his story, he goes down to Egypt to escape Herod and then obviously has to come back up out of Egypt.

And he's saying, hey, look, this fulfills what the prophet says.

Now, here's the challenge.

Hosea wasn't actually making a future prediction.

He wasn't saying one day a Messiah is going to come and he's going to be sent down to Egypt and then he's going to be brought up out of Egypt.

In the context of the passage, Hosea is actually describing Israel's story.

He's talking about the Exodus, the point at which Israel lived as slaves in Egypt and then God sent Moses and brought Israel out of Egypt.

And he's saying in this passage, he's reinterpreting history.

He's saying, hey, when I brought you out of Egypt, I was like a father and I was calling you out.

I was bringing my son out of chains.

I was bringing my son out of Egypt.

So it's kind of weird when Matthew comes along and he says all of a sudden that Jesus is fulfilling this prophecy.

Or I say it's weird if you think that the only form of fulfillment is prediction, because that's not what Matthew's trying to imply.

You see, what Matthew's trying to show us isn't merely that Jesus fulfills the predictions.

He's trying to show us that Jesus fulfills the patterns of the Old Testament.

You see, what he's trying to do in this moment is show that Jesus is the ultimate Israel.
