And so was fulfilled.
So this is the fulfillment passage.
And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet.
Out of Egypt, I have called my son.
When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and in its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi.
Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled.
A voice is heard in Ramah, weeping in great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted because they are no more.
So if we look at this passage, we're going to see two different forms of prophecy and fulfillment.
In the first instance, Matthew gives us a passage from the prophet Hosea.
And this is what Hosea wrote.
He said, And he says that Jesus, in his story, he goes down to Egypt to escape Herod and then obviously has to come back up out of Egypt.
And he's saying, hey, look, this fulfills what the prophet says.
Now, here's the challenge.
Hosea wasn't actually making a future prediction.
He wasn't saying one day a Messiah is going to come and he's going to be sent down to Egypt and then he's going to be brought up out of Egypt.
In the context of the passage, Hosea is actually describing Israel's story.
He's talking about the Exodus, the point at which Israel lived as slaves in Egypt and then God sent Moses and brought Israel out of Egypt.
