And of course, people start weeping.
And so he quotes the prophet Jeremiah and says that Jeremiah was fulfilled.
And here's the passage.
He says, a voice is heard in Ramah weeping and great mourning.
Rachel, she was kind of a matriarch of Israel.
She's weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted because they are no more.
Now, again, in context, Jeremiah wasn't making a prediction about a future Messiah.
In context, he was talking about the destruction of Jerusalem and Jerusalem's temple by a foreign nation called Babylon.
He's saying, hey, this nation's coming.
They're going to destroy Jerusalem.
They're going to burn down the temple.
They're going to murder women and children.
And of course, there's going to be great weeping for all of the loss that we experience.
So Matthew takes this passage and he says, just as people in Jeremiah's day wept for the destruction of Jerusalem, so we see the same pattern happening today.
People weeping for the destruction that's occurring in Bethlehem.
Now here's the real kicker.
You see what Jeremiah goes on to do in the passage is he says, yes, you're going to be exiled.
The people of God were going to be sent out of Israel, but he's going to establish a new covenant.
He's going to renew their hearts.
He's going to put his spirit inside of his people and he's going to bring them back to himself.
