But in reality, he was looking for a person.
His way out wasn't paved by asphalt.
It was paved by the sacrificial love of people who carried him from place to place.
In John 14, Jesus has gathered his disciples for a last meal before his crucifixion.
He's told them that he's leaving them, and they simply can't conceptualize that.
They've followed him for three years.
So all they want is one thing, a road, a path, a way back to Jesus.
Let's pick up in verse 1.
Do not let your hearts be troubled.
You believe in God.
Believe also in me.
My Father's house has many rooms.
If that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you?
And if I go to prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me, that you may also be where I am.
You know the way to the place where I am going.
The disciples are taking all this quite literally.
Jesus is going somewhere and he says they already know the road.
But Thomas, who's never afraid to ask a question, pipes up and he says, Lord, we don't know where you're going.
So how can we know the way there?
Thomas is saying, look, again, we don't know where you're going.
