And yet that was basically what the courts accepted and they accepted his confession.
About 15 months later, Oscar Branagh and Brian McNally are released on appeal because it is deemed that the evidence against them was prepared under oppressive circumstances.

And to use a term used by the then Chief Justice Tom O'Higgins, he exhausted the appellate jurisdiction of the state and the state found that he must stay in prison on the same evidence that these men had been released on.

It was crazy.
Then he went on hunger strike and did himself some harm.
He was on hunger strike for 38 days and he has never physically recovered fully from that.
He's had bad health over a number of years and is in and out of hospital currently.
There was a fundraiser event for an inquiry into all of this last March, as recently as last March, again with Christy Moore, Keela, Damien Dempsey.
