They were involved in every protest on the streets of Dublin and wherever, and indeed in Northern Ireland.

Very sympathetic, in particular to the nationalist population in Northern Ireland, but ideologically favouring both communities, because that was the view from the Marxist interpretation of what was happening in Northern Ireland at the time.

So they were known to the guards and the special branch as protesters, as out in the streets.

And I mean, I often think the title used by Gene Kerrigan and Derek Dunne for their 1984 book is so clever.

And that's what happened.

I mean, there was hundreds of people who rounded up initially.

It was by a group of journalists in the paper back in 1977.

They got evidence that there was a sort of a core group.

It had been the murder squad whose job it was basically to get to use whatever methods they believed necessary to get confessions out of people.

And of course they were involved in the Kerry Babies case.

Some of the members of this particular gang with Joanne Hayes and her family getting them to confess to a murder.

This super fecundity it was called.

that Joanne, who had their initially arrestor in connection with the death of a baby, found stabbed in Caerf, Syveen Strand, miles away from Aberdorney, where the family lived.

And then they discovered, as a family did indicate, that there was another remains of a miscarried baby on the farm.

Which was her miscarriage.

But they, again, were so far in, they had to stick with the original story.
