Nothing happened.
But it was my first taste.
of being in the studio and getting close to that dream, which happened the following year when I went to New York.
William, I try to tell all the young people I work with today, and they don't get it.
You have no idea what it was like.
If you didn't have decent pitch and the tone, you walked in a studio, you rehearsed for an hour, and maybe you got it in three, four, five takes.
And when you were done, if you didn't like something...
they took a razor blade and a piece of tape, and they would cut the tape on a piece of metal and put it back on and tape it with scotch tape.
That was it.
And you sang till you got it.
And that's how it happened when I wound up in New York.
You know, when you go back to the 50s,
Everybody had to have that high-pitched sound.
It even evolved into today.
A lot of us, you, a lot of the guys post the 50s, it's what they were about, searching for who they were as a person or an artist, and everybody had to sing up the octave.
They're always maximizing.
So you heard all this.
Everyone had a high voice.
The only guys that didn't, indigenous to that group, were Sinatra, Sammy, and Dean.
Their talking voices were their singing voices.
